How to Thaw a Frozen Condensate Pipe.
Hello, I’m Tony Jones, British Gas engineer.
I’m here today to show you how to thaw your condensate waste pipe if it has become frozen.
Modern condensing boilers are extremely efficient. As a by-product condensation is produced,
which runs through your condensate waste pipe. In extreme weather conditions, your condensate
pipe can freeze, which could lead the boiler to shut down. Ideally we recommend that you
call a British Gas engineer out to thaw your pipe and give you some advice to stop this
happening in the future. However, I am going to show you some tips you can do to thaw your
own waste pipe.
First locate your frozen condensate pipe outside. Place a hot water bottle on the waste pipe
where you think it’s frozen.
Alternatively, pour hot water directly on the waste pipe using something like a watering
can.
With your boiler out of action, heat the water using a kettle or a microwave but please do
not use boiling water. Always ensure you’re at ground level and never disconnect the pipe.
Please take extreme care when thawing condensate waste.
To stop freezing in the future you can have a trace heater element installed. These only
cost a few pounds a year to run and they are extremely effective. If you’re still having
problems and you’d like to book an installation, please contact us on our website.
