Other universities didn't have a program like the Sustainable Cities Initiative.
SCI
brings students from
multiple disciplines throughout campus into a community, working with that
community and staff at the community level
on real projects. Most universities have a planning program
where they dream up scenarios for students
to engage with planning projects.
The University of Oregon's Sustainable Cities Initiative
brings students into cities to work on real-life
projects that the cities have identified
and have asked the students to work on for them.
That means that when I graduate I will have worked
with city staff
in local governments
on real projects not just making up
problems in the classroom.
I'll know what the issues are -- what the legal issues are, what the budgetary issues are,
what the political issues are
in the local government and know how to deal with those.
At other schools you don't have that sort of opportunity.
I think it means that I have great experience,
not just on paper, but when I actually get
into an office
I'm going to know how to talk to people
in many different
disciplines, many different types of professionals,
I'm going to know how to interact with them and I'm going to know how to ask the types of questions that I
need to know to be able to do my job better.
