Do bodybuilders need to deadlift? I’ve heard everything from the pros have to do it, to
no serious body builder does it.
The deadlift is when you pick up a loaded barbell off the ground, stand up, hold it
and then put it back down.
That would seem to build up your muscles.
It is one of the three basic powerlifting moves, the squat and bench press being the
others. However, body builders don’t have to deadlift.
Then who does the deadlift?
Deadlifting is primarily the purview of the power lifters.
Which is body building.
Oh, no, it isn’t. Power lifting is when you make a sport out of lifting the most weight
or holding a weight for a long duration.
And that builds up your muscles.
Body builders are looking at building their whole body, including their legs, arms, back,
butt and, well, everything.
Whereas a power lifter doesn’t care how his legs work as long as they don’t give
out.
And body builders have to do a lot more preening for their competitions, from shaving their
chest and armpits to oiling up. Powerlifters rarely care, because they aren’t in it for
the looks.
Body builders are in a beauty competition for guys.
Well, it is certainly more aesthetic than the shows Honey Boo Boo is in.
If that’s reality, plug me back into the Matrix.
Back to the subject, body builders may deadlift some because it builds up their back. However,
some avoid it because it widens their hips.
That wouldn’t seem like a bad thing.
If you are working on six pack abs, a workout that makes the Adonis muscles wider messes
up the look. And then there is the more pragmatic reason to avoid it, the risk of injury.
What type of injury?
If you hurt your back, you pretty much get knocked out of the gym.
It is a leading reason for disability claims with Social Security.
Yeah, but a judge won’t give you disability because you hurt your back and Adonis muscles
trying to look like a Greek God.
