Hi, my name is Dave Dudley and I'm here today to explain single stream
recycling
to you and your family.
Today many families have ninety five gallon containers like this one
to put all of their recyclables in
but if you're like me,
you don't know exactly what is recyclable with this program.
Today I'm going to show you some of the most common items in your home that can
be recycled and what happens to them. Let's go inside.
Did you know over fifty percent of the items in your home are recyclable?
Studies from the EPA
show paper metal and plastic products
make up more than half of the items we throw away.
Single stream recycling was developed to make recycling easier for families by
eliminating sorting.
Your items are taken to a recycling processor
where they travel over belts and true sorters to be separated then bailed for
shipment.
Single stream recycling
is a specific program for papers, metals, cardboard and plastic products only.
Other products like your yard waste, clothing, food and
glass,
can all be recycled but they are not accepted in this program.
Here at Rocky Mountain recycling we're thrilled to see the growth and what's happening
to the Wasatch front with the communities that have started a program and the
difference that it's made in diverting waste that was going into the landfill
is now processed at a facility like this.
We see more changes in the past
two years from the previous thirteen combined and it's proof that recycling
is not only trend that is here to stay
and it's going to be the best way we can divert that waste and ensure that we're
able to give our kids and the future generations
a clean sustainable life and earth.
Now you're probably wondering
how do i get my family to recycle all this material?
Well the easiest way is to get it in front of them.
If you place bins around your home in the office, kitchen, and bathrooms you can
give them a choice to trash or recycling their products.
Some homes have two bins side by side for trash and recycling.
Most recycle bins can be purchased at any hardware home goods or store if you
can't find bins you can call us and we will send you pictures of what we
provide or suggest contractors for custom covers or cans.
If your home is like mine your main garbage can is in the kitchen.
I have a separate trash and recycling can in my kitchen to make things easier
for my family.
Please remember not to use plastic bags for your recyclables, it slows the
sorting process.
Also please rinse food off your products before discarding. Excessive
food waste on recyclables can contaminate them in the recreation
process.
Let's take a minute to go through some items
that are acceptable in this program:
cardboard items,
from boxes to
food items,
cans, aluminum,
tin foil,
even metal cans,
plastic products,
bottles of all shapes and sizes, plastic bags and wrap,
plastic food containers,
sacks,
cereal boxes,
food containers,
egg cartons, and paper plates.
Also magazines
as well as newspapers.
Now that you know more about single stream recycling, you're probably
wondering
what happens to the materials that i recycle?
Newspapers end up as insulation, egg cartons, paperboard, sheet rock, paper
plates.
Magazines end up as telephone books and newspaper cardboard ends up as paper
bags, new cardboard, paperboard, and cardboard medium office paper ends up as
facial tissue, new computer paper,
napkins, and paper towels. Metal cans end up as bike parts, rebar and new cans.
Aluminum cans end up back on the shelf in sixty days and plastics end up in
carpet,
backpacks, and sleeping bags.
There are many reasons to help our environment with responsible recycling.
Single stream recycling targets the most common items in your home to be
reproduced.
The future of our society involves recycling and Ace is happy to help you
with any questions or services you may need.
Thank you for your interest and participation in Ace's recycling
program,
because after all
Ace Disposal business is always picking up.
Hello my name is Lon Stallsberg,
manager and owner of Ace Recycling and
Disposal. I wanted to take some time today to thank you for your interest in the recycling
and the effort you're making to make you Utah's future better.
Ace hauls many of it's recyclables throughout the Valley for commercial
and residential customers.
We've made important changes to our operations in our facilities
to improve our carbon footprint.
Today we run 10 natural gas vehicles and five years from now
two-thirds of our fleet will be running on natural gas.
At our new facility
we have put in a geothermal heating exchange system
to provide us with sustainable energy
and also we put in a xeroscape landscape design
to conserve water.
I started Ace thirty years ago and thirty years from now I hope we have
continued to find better ways to manage pollution, conserve water,
and produce
efficient sustainable energy. Again I want to thank you one more time for your
interest in making Utah a better place to live and work. Thanks again.
