We are here in Barangay Rajah Cabungso-an
as part of our emergency relief assistance program
organized and implemented by Katribu Party List
in cooperation with the CDRC (Citizens’ Relief and Rehabilitation Center)
Bread for Emergency Response and other institutions and non-government organizations
This is to bring relief goods
to the most isolated communities of Lingig, Surigao del Sur
including Rajah Cabungsu-an and Tubod
which are gravely affected by the typhoon.
We saw firsthand the effects of the typhoon
Houses were destroyed, schools--- and even chapels
everything was destroyed by the wrath of typhoon Pablo.
There is only one reason why the damage has been this great;
it is because of climate change.
This area used to be a PICOP (logging) concession.
The forests have been denuded and no big trees are left
that could have provided some protection from the strong winds.
This contributed to the extent of the damage to the environment and the lives of the people.
One of the problems we face now is, these typhoons are new to us.
Unlike the decades ago when we have never been hit by big typhoons in the the CARAGA Region.
Today, Mindanao has been repeatedly visited by big typhoons like Sendong and Pablo
This should be an important election issue as we are sure there would be other calamities and disaster coming our way.
According to environment experts this calamities are caused by the destruction of the environment
However, this is not just simply about natural calamities
wrong national policies are also to be blamed.
The government should ensure that laws are made
for the safety and welfare of the Filipino people.
The coming election is an opportune time for us to choose
the leaders who will defend the interests of the indigenous peoples and the environment.
In our two days of relief operations here at Rajah Cabungso-an,
we have 554 beneficiary families here in Barangay Cabungso-an alone.
That is according to the official list of the barangay
But we actually gave out to more families.
The other villages are not yet included
In the town of Lingig alone, there are about 2,000 beneficiary-families
At present, we are still accepting donations for the victims of Typhoon Pablo from kind-hearted people.
Our relief operations is still ongoing, Our relief operations is still ongoing, especially for the indigenous peoples
Katribu Partylist is one with the struggles of the indigenous peoples.
