Hi, I'm Gretchen Soares and welcome to Expert Village. Today we're going to be making soy
candles. In this clip we're going to discuss the wicks; what they're made of and why we
use those. For these candles I use a hundred percent cotton wicks because we have a natural
soy bean product that's all natural. We wouldn't want to put any man made product in this because
it would make it burn not as cleanly and not as good for the environment in the home. Also,
these wicks do not have lead inside of them. When you buy manufactured candles quite often
the paraffin or the wax that they use is substandard quality and in order for it to actually burn
they put lead through the wick and that's what makes the candle burn. That's actually
what's burning. So when you have a candle that just dwells down in the center and is
only burning around the flame it's because the material the candle is made out of is
substandard quality and what is actually burning is the lead in the wick. And with all of the
health hazards in lead I don't believe in using those at all so we use a hundred percent
cotton wicking for our candles.
