Friends!
Now, for many it is a paradise on earth.
It’s where the concrete jungle loses its hold and where a natural path begins, nature’s road.
The Galapagos islands, just look at that, what a wonder.
Famous for the great number of species studied by Charles Darwin and for the scientists
Who made the flora and fauna foundation for the theory of evolution.
A new tool now gives us the opportunity to tour places never before imagined.
In fact, that’s why tonight, here on ‘Tecnologia sin Limites’, Our guest will join us via Skype from Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Lucky him!
Well, good evening, Emmanuel Evita, global communications and public relations manager for no less than Google.
How are you?
Good, good, good evening.
Good evening.
What time is it?
Let’s see, what time is it over there?
It is 12:42 in the morning.
My god, it is already early saturday, you’re about to go dancing as soon as we finish here, aren’t you?
But, well, tell us something Emmanuel, how does this work and why is the technology used in the street view trekker innovative?
Yes, when we started the street view project in ‘97, we used camera equipment that we mounted on cars to go through cities
and tourist places-but after some time, we wanted more flexibility to get to places that you don’t get to go with cars
and then we mounted some equipment on top of a backpack to enable us to get into natural reserves
national monuments and places like the Galapagos islands.
And, it is my understanding that this is going to help scientists, am I right? researchers?
Yes, we are working with the Charles Darwin foundation, which studies the ecosystem’s ecology
which is so important, and they will use the images to bring their studies to the people to show the ecological impact in the area.
Incredible.
Well, let’s talk a bit more about Google’s objective by making these images accessible
because all users will be able to see them over the internet.
Yes, the very interesting thing about the internet is that it is a great source of educational
informative and cultural information, and we want to bring all that richness to those user that don’t have the means to buy
a plane ticket to travel to wonderful places, so that’s part of the reason
to bring paradise and important places to the user, and to bring the user to those places through the internet.
And, I can imagine, because of all that access, tell me, have you had any experience out of the ordinary or any problema
with something you were trying to record, I don’t know, is there any story you can tell us?
These are always projects that have very complicated logistics.
For that island image capture, we brought two skypers, one to capture images of the land
the other we set up in a boat in order to capture images from the coast, and we had other equipment that we mounted under the water.
Yes, that’s what we were looking at.
Yes, and it was very impressive.
And I, unfortunately, wasn’t able to go, but the team that did go stayed there taking pictures for ten days.
It was a wonderful experience.
I can imagine-but, how is it possible that I wasn’t invited?
It will have to be next time, won’t it, Emmanuel?
I hope so.
Of course, and please call me, because I would be delighted to go with you.
Thank you very much, Emmanuel, for joining us from Brazil at time of day-it’s a bit late over there.
Obrigado, as they say in portuguese.
