Do I have depression or anxiety?
Depression is anger without enthusiasm, while anxiety is angst without direction.
I’m so worried about the future, but I can’t do anything about it.
You can have anxiety and depression simultaneously.
What’s the cure?
Aside from adopting a care free attitude or joining a cult?
And don’t tell me meds.
Depression is when you feel hopeless and helpless with regard to your situation. The solution
is often developing a plan to make your life better.
Or anti-depressants.
It’s sad how many women go to a psychologist for coping with a cheating husband instead
of a divorce attorney, and then they get drugs to make themselves not care.
What about anxiety?
Humans are hardwired to fear the predators that may lurk in the dark. That’s why little
kids all see monsters under the bed or in the closet.
I’m an adult.
We used to worry about sabertooth tigers that might leap from above and maul us or starving
over the winter. Now we worry about whether our partners will leave us or the stock prices
fluctuate.
What’s the solution?
Learn to set priorities for what to worry about. You should worry about how to pay your
bills when money is tight, but worrying about the economy in general is hopeless.
What do I do about depression?
There are crazy psychologists who tried to say that if you’re still grieving six months
later after losing a spouse of sixty years you need to see a shrink for drugs.
I’d love to have loved someone that long.
If you’ve gone through a divorce, separated with a partner, lost a job or a pet or a relative,
pain and grief is normal.
What if I haven’t had a life event like that?
Maybe you’re depressed at feeling trapped in a job you don’t like or failing to live
up to an impossible set of expectations. Counseling might help in that case.
Or quitting my job.
As long as you’ve got a plan in place so you’re next problem isn’t high anxiety
over how to pay the bills.
