For students at Hillview school in Tonbridge, the wait is finally over...
Student 1 'I got the grades I needed to go to university so im quite happy'
As envelopes were torn open, results showed that passes were up from last year by an estimated
2.1 percent, bringing the overall pass rate to 93.5 percent, making the county, yet again,
one of the top performers in the country.
Student 2 'I got into uni and im going to Portsmouth next year and it's my 18th birthday
so it's the best present ever'
Head teacher -Yes the result has been very good infact it's been the best i've traced
back for five years it appears at the moment in terms of their scores so students have
achieved on average just above a C grade in every exam they've taken
Despite these record breaking results, statistics show that up to 200,000 students across the
country may not get a university place....
CONNEXIONS GUY There's much more competition for university places this year and the number
of students may be disappointed if they dont get the grades they need. If that happens
and they have to enter clearing then we want to make sure they understands that wee on
hand to see them and to help them take advantage of the vacancies that do remain.
Headteacher- They have to achieve 90 percent or above to get that A* grade so it really
will identify students who achieve very highly and be a real credit to them
But yet another year of record pass rates has caused some to question the value of the
A level as a measurement of academic achievement...
Jenny Whittle - Many critics argue that A levels are getting easier and I completely
disagree with that. I think so would most of the pupils here, and parents. I think nowadays
there are so many exams as part of A levels, and pupils are continuously examined and that
is very hard work but I think that A level results are getting better because pupils
are much better prepared than say 10 -20 years ago when I did my A levels
Headteacher: They are still the standard that are understood and accepted by the vast majority
of universities, business. They are something that are recognizable and still i think for
the majority of people hold a good standard for better or for worse the A level is the
standard that is accepted and I cant see it changing in the near future.
