Step 3 in creating a rain garden
is digging the garden and amending the soil
Before digging your garden, call your local utility service
and have them mark any underground lines
Some soil, such as compacted soil
does not absorb water as quickly as others
Amendments such as sand, top soil and compost
can be added to compacted soils
to reduce the density and increase the permeability
Use the excess soil you've extracted from the site
to build the berm on the downhill side of your garden
This will help trap runoff and allow the water
more time to infiltrate into your rain garden
Once you have amended the soil and built the berm
you can move onto Step 4
which is planting your garden with native plants
