Three or four years ago once you got just past 8 o'clock St Mary's Lane outside would be absolutely clogged with cars.
It seemed to be ridiculous that some children would be coming in by car...
and then would sometimes be late for school but they were actually coming in from a relatively short distance away.
Worked to actually get children who could cycle into school to cycle in, because obviously they are not going to get clogged up in the traffic...
and then they will get to school on time.
I didn't come to this school to do admin, my main job is as sites manager so more getting my hands dirty.
I like to achieve real results where we see we have a 10% reduction in car use in the last three years.
And we're a sports academy so we don't want unhealthy students...
what we want is healthy students who are eating properly, getting to school properly.
Transport for London really liked the ideas that our youth travel ambassador's have come up with...
and we've been given two awards this year for our sustainability and for all the effort that we've been putting in, as a real stand out school.
About two months ago we got a new bike shed installed with forty spaces on top of the other two bike sheds we already had...
and already it is full up.
We do actually have lockers built into the cycle sheds so if people do have coats they can actually put them in the lockers.
When somebody cycles in three times in a row they get a bikers breakfast card, which gives them a free breakfast or a hot chocolate.
I used to come by car all the time but now I find it's a lot quicker and the traffic used to be really long...
and I used to end up getting out and running to school because the traffic was so far down the road.
I wanted to get fitter and I suppose sometimes it gets you to school quicker as well.
It makes you have more fun with all your friends.
I knock for Dan and my friend Ollie, and Tom, and Evan, and we all ride to school together.
So it's not just about that you can get free breakfast and all that, it's just the fun of riding with your mates.
With the TfL design the whole concept of having a bikers breakfast from a poster campaign,...
what they should do during the bikers breakfast, registration form, that's been really, really helpful,...
so it's meant very minimal work from me.
Slide your bike forward, you should have no movement in your back wheel.
Bikeability was set up to give training for students to take part in a session where they will be able to cycle along the road safely.
Parents worry about safety sometimes, for instance the year 7 children if they are walking to school...
or cycling to school by themselves for the first time, parents might not really want them to do that.
We do provide Bikeability for year 7's and year 8's, and it's all free.
We get everyone to do it so they can get to school in a safe and friendly way.
How far into the road do we normally ride? 1 meter
1 meter is the correct answer, well done, good group here. What do you think I do a lot of as I am approaching a junction?
Looking?
Lots of looking, good answer. Signal left, back on, hands over the brakes.
Start your looking left and right.
I think it encourages people to actually cycle on the road because I think with out the training...
they would be a bit lost and so we wouldn't know what to do.
Cycling on the road with trucks and lorries, and cars, you need to know how to cycle safely.
You need to know what position you need to be in on the road and how to turn left and right and how to be confident on the road, that is the big thing.
Start your looking please.
My mum is scared about me riding on the road because she thinks that I am a little bit...
vunerable on the road but she said that she wanted me to do this so that I am able to build up my confidence as well as hers.
If you are thinking about how to move around, for an adult that is quite a fundamental basic thing to do.
The children are going to go round, they're going to survey the local streets...
and assess at different points how they feel when they're there, what things make them...
want to cycle and what also would prevent them from doing it and make them feel nervous.
It's traditional mapping, it's emotional mapping and then it's *** up to date so that we can...
present our results in a very visually appealing and understandable way.
Thank you again.... I know the amount of time you have put in.... not just during school time
but at lunchtimes, after school and also during the summer holidays as well.
This is the time to get your thinking caps on guys about what other activities we would like to do.
I don't know if anyone's got any initial ideas now, maybe you can throw them out.
Amelia?
We could look at the buses because we always get complaints about how everyone behaves on buses around our school.
Maybe you could get a couple of representatives from each year and then sit those down with a couple of bus drivers...
because you could take a couple of suggestions from each form.
We've got a stereotype of bus drivers and the bus drivers have got a stereotype of us and we kind of need to cut that out...
because we are actually....the bus drivers are actually alright but they just don't want bad people on their buses.
Bike polo is an extremely ridiculous sport in a way, because you're on a bike with a stick and a ball,...
and then obviously unless you are a reasonably skilled cyclist you are going to fall over.
So we don't let anyone else apart from the students who have completed Bikeability level 3 take part in this sport.
You can't put your feet down so you have to learn how to stay still and you have to get good control...
and how to keep it next to you and how to shoot.
I feel I've got better because I've learnt how to balance and use one hand easily and core basic skills which you improve on by playing this game.
The students have a lot of fun with it, really enjoyable sport.
"Well done Jack."
I like coaching them and training them also it's really good, its my...
baby a such, so its something I've rolled out, and lots of other students want to get involved so it's only going to go from strength to strength, it's great.
Schemes like this that Transport for London put forward they create a chance for children to learn in a more fun way,...
more relaxed way very often and also in a way that they can direct their learning, they can pick what it is they want to learn and they can fly with it.
So this really is about educating the whole person.
