Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls with Hershey's Icing You Tube – Supertaster: Daily
Hello. I'm James Norton for CHOW.com's Supertaster and today I'm talking about Pillsbury Hershey's
Chocolate Icing, Special Edition Cinnamon Rolls. Now, these are interesting to me for
a couple of contradictory reasons. The first is I like Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls. I'm not
ashamed of it. I grew up with them as a kid. The memory of slathering that icing on the
hot cinnamon rolls right out of the oven. I mean it's not exactly [audio skip/old*00:30]
cuisine. I'm okay with that. I think they're like a decent refrigerator case, pop open
the cardboard dude product.
The second reason it's interesting to me is that I think Hershey's is terrible. I look
at the Hershey's label on a chocolate bar and I think, "Oh, it's the worst chocolate
in the world. How can you even call it chocolate?" It's waxy. It's sugary. It's just a betrayal
of what chocolate stands for, so why gunk up a cinnamon roll with chocolate? You've
got already a fairly strong flavor direction going when you have a cinnamon roll. I'm not
sure why you'd want to get chocolate involved. I think the two flavors are going to clash
or talk over each other but, I don't know, I haven't tried them yet so the thing to do,
I think, is just to set them up, throw them in the oven, pop them out and give them a
taste.
Okay. It's pretty much as I feared. You're losing the cinnamon in the flavor of substandard
chocolate. There's still that kind of doughy sweetness about Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls that's
fairly pleasant but, you know, I think they've taken a good thing and turned it into a slightly
less good thing here.
So thank you so much for joining me. If you don't already, please subscribe to Supertaster:
