During Police Week, the
Office of Justice Programs is proud to honor the brave and dedicated officers
who enforce our laws and protect our communities.
We know that for them each day brings new challenges, new dangers,
and yet they face those dangers with courage and a
fierce devotion to duty
and we are grateful.
Our streets and homes are safer because of their service,
but we are mindful that our safety is dearly bought.
Our nation's peace officers put themselves in harm's way every single day,
and they're often called upon to make
the ultimate sacrifice.
We too have a solemn duty to protect them.
We are fulfilling that duty through the work of our National Institute of
Justice and the Bureau of Justice Assistance.
Through our Body Armor Safety Initiative
we're working to make sure the protective gear is scientifically tested
to meet rigorous standards,
and we have issued a challenge to researchers to determine just how long
body armor can remain effective.
Under our Bulletproof Vest Partnership program,
we have helped to provide hundreds of thousands of bulletproof vests to
officers on the street.
Our Valor program has trained thousands of law enforcement professionals on how
to prevent deadly encounters,
and our Public Safety Officers' Benefits program continues to assist the families
of those who have so bravely given their lives.
We are proud to support these men and women who work so hard
and give selflessly of themselves.
We stand beside them because they stand up
for us.
To each and every one of them, we say thank you.
