>> Hi, I'm Dan Davis; Chief of Police here at Sacramento State. Safety is our
top priority, we are here 24 hours a day-7 days a week. On patroll, on foot, on
bike to protect you.
>> This Campus is still very safe, it's still rate in the top 15 percent of
campuses throughout the nation. We pride ourselves on a very proactive approach
to law enforcement here on campus being community oriented. And we care a great
deal about the community we serve. We investigate crimes that are reported to us
very, very thoroughly.
We will have community service officers patrolling the campus in the evening
hours during school, in golf carts and on foot as well so that people can not
only get escorts out to their cars, but they can get escorts on campus from
class to class from residence halls to classrooms.
The university is in the process of installing security cameras on the campus,
our basic installation is nearly finished. We have a number of cameras placed in
strategic locations throughout the campus. We are examining the possibility of
adding a few more.
We have essentially doubled the number of emergency telephones we have on
campus. we now have 152 emergency "blue light" telephones stationed all over the
campus in various places.
We Always say be aware of your surroundings, take the ear-buds out of the ears.
Put the phone away in less there is an emergency you need to call. Program in
our number, the campus police department - (916) 278-6851 - Program that into
your cell phone so you can reach us more quickly. Our response time is very very
fast here on campus, generaly under 3 minutes. Walk in groups, and of course
make use of our community service officer program we have here at night, but the
hornet shuttle service that runs here at night. And the escort service offered
through U-T-A-P-S.
Watch your consumption of intoxicants, don't consume alcohol to excess. It
lessons your resistance, it makes you more prone to criminal behavior. So we
always recommend, moderation in all things.
Pay attention to where you are, pay attention , pay attention to who you are
with. If you don't know this person, they make you uncomfortable; back away,
don't be afraid to call us.
Don't be afraid to make noise, if they are uncomfortable in a situation, they
feel like someone is stalking them, or following them and their uncomfortable
with the situation...Make Noise, get attention, go to somewhere where there is
light.
If you are walking here, try to walk in groups if you can, walk in well-lit
areas. If you are walking across campus, make note where the emergency phones
are located.Almost everyone has a cell phone these days, program our number into
that.
If you are riding a bicycle, stay in well lit areas at night. Make sure your
bicycle is registered and licensed with the University police department. Record
the serial number in case it ever is taken. Invest in a good bicycle lock.
What we always tell people if you can, refuse to be a victim. But don't resist
to the point where you are going to endanger yourself.
Self-defense training however is excellent. It teaches people #1; how to avoid
dangerous situations. And #2; get themselves out of them, give them alternatives
to consider should they find themselves in those situations. And the campus does
offer a number of self-defense classes.
Pepper spray is legal on the campus, as long as it is 2 and a half ounces or
less. Pepper-Spray is legal. We recommend that if students carry it, they know
its limitations.
Stun-guns are not legal on the campus, firearms are prohibited by anyone but law
enforcement on the campus.
>> Sac State has been and will be one of the safest campuses in the nation. We
look forward to working with you to help keep it safe.
