Merci, Madame
Aimable: Genevieve, Genevieve! Look around! Well, do you like it?
Genevieve: I think I like it!
Aimable:
Did you hear that - she likes it! Did you hear that, Pompom?
My darling says she likes it --- Did you hear that, Pompom?
Can you see her face is shining and her eyes give off a light?
Bright as the moon is bright...
Come take a little look at our bakery, a little look at our house.
Other men might look at that sight, and only see a house.
But I can see something better, than the emperor’s place in Rome
Ask me what....
Genevieve: All right, what?
Aimable:
I can see ... a home! Merci, madame, merci, madame
You make a home for us, Pompom and I agree, madame.
It’s heaven just to watch you dust or hear the oven slam. - Merci, merci, madame!
I know exactly what you are thinking. Exactly what’s on your mind,
you’re looking around thinking we’ve found the best place we could find.
But I can imagine someplace I would rather be, it’s true. Ask me where
Genevieve: All right, where?
Aimable:
Here...a little closer to you. To say merci, madame! Merci, madame!
If you are there, then that is where I want to be, madame
Sit on my lap and I’m as happy as a giant clam. Merci, merci, madame.
Aimable:
Ah, oui, merci, madame
Merci, madame
The past is past, and now at last
It’s you and me, madame.
The past is past, and now at last
I’m feeling safe and sure
Merci, merci
Madame
Genevieve:
Et vous, monsieur
You too, monsieur
How true, monsieur
And now at last
I’m feeling safe and sure
Merci, merci
Monsieur
I’ve got a little lift in my outlook, a little lift in my step.
Darling, I mean, when have you seen a man with so much pep?
And suddenly I can do things, other men my age can’t do
Ask me how.... „All right how?“ I caught youth from you...
Merci, madame, merci madame
The years just drop and they won’t stop while you’re with me, madame
It seems your age is as contagious as a case of flu Look at this.... Look at that....
I’ve got a new life, a new wife, and someday, if maybe We could have a baby.
What else is there to say Besides merci, madame....? Merci, beaucoup?
Any Day Now
Aimable:
Come on and fill up your glasses, let’s drink a toast
Here’s to the person you love the most.
Mine may be missing ... but let it coast.
And on with the beer, and off with the foam
Let’s drink to that any-day-now day
When she comes home....
Oh, it’s probably tomorrow I’ll welcome her back
I’m sure it’s so soon that I don’t keep track
I even think this time she might unpack.
So bring me a glass, no, make it an urn
Let’s drink to that Any-day-now day.
She will return!
I close my eyes and see her climbing the hill
Or scurring down the steps again
Not for one moment do I doubt she will
But I wish I knew when - so I could be ready...
Getting everything sparkling, everything nice.
Cake in the oven, champagne on ice.
And much as I hate to, I may shave twice
So what do you know?
Hey, what do you say?
Shall we drink to that
Any-day-now day
Now that’ll be the day!
So won’t you join me in a snifter or two?
Won’t somebody match me pound for pound?
Whereever she is, she’d worry if she knew
We were moping around , so to keep her happy...
Let’s have one for good measure, and one fust for spite
And one for the road that she’s on tonight
We’ll keep the home fires burning bright
With a little more help, from the Beaujolais
As we drink to that Any-day-now day
Now that’ll be the day!
Meadowlark
When I was a girl, I had a favourite story
Of the meadowlark who lived where the rivers wind
Her voice could match the angels' in its glory,
But she was blind,
The lark was blind.
An old king came and took her to his palace,
Where the walls were burnished bronze and golden braid,
And he fed her fruit and nuts from an ivory chalice and he prayed
"Sing for me, my meadowlark
Sing for me of the silver morning.
Set me free, my meadowlark
And I'll buy you a priceless jewel,
And cloth of brocade and crewel,
And I'll love you for life if you will
Sing for me."
Than one day as the lark sang by the water
The god of the sun heard her in his flight
And her singing moved him so, he came and brought her
The gift of sight,
He gave her sight.
And she opened her eyes to the shimmer and the splendour
Of this beautiful young god, so proud and strong
And he called to the lark in a voice both rough and tender,
"Come along,
Fly with me, my meadowlark,
Fly with me on the silver morning.
Past the sea where the dolphins bark,
We will dance on the coral beaches,
Make a feast of the plums and peaches,
Just as far as your vision reaches,
Fly with me."
But the meadowlark said no,
For the old king loved her so,
She couldn't bear to wound his pride.
So the sun god flew away and when the king came down that day,
He found his meadowlark had died.
Every time I heard that part I cried.
And now I stand here, starry-eyed and stormy.
Oh, just when I thought my heart was finally numb,
A beautiful young man appears before me
Singing "Come
Oh, won't you come?"
And what can I do if finally for the first time
The one I'm burning for returns the glow?
If love has come at last it's picked the worst time
Still I know
I've got to go.
Fly away, meadowlark.
Fly away in the silver morning.
If I stay, I'll grow to curse the dark,
So it's off where the days won't bind me.
I know I leave wounds behind me,
But I won't let tomorrow find me
Back this way.
Before my past once again can blind me,
Fly away.
And we won't wait to say goodbye,
My beautiful young man and I.
If I ever fall in love again
If I ever fall in love again,
It'll be with someone just like you.
I don't say that I'm in love again
But on the day you came my way, I knew.
If I ever fall in love again,
This is just the way it ought to be,
But if it's really love again,
I'll leave to fate, I'd rather wait and see.
How can I know
When my head is saying no
And my heart's telling me that it's real?
Can it be wrong
If I burst into song
At the wonder of feeling the way
That I suddenly feel?
If I ever fall in love again
I shall know exactly what to do.
And when I fall in love again
I know it must be someone just like you.
The way that I suddenly feel!
If I ever fall in love again
I shall know exactly what to do.
And when I fall in love again
I know it must be someone just like you.
Where Is The Warmth
Look at him, that's a face;
that's a profile to admire.
Look at him, that's a torso that's rare.
When I look at him, how I burn to be touching him;
the fire is there.
But where is the warmth?
Look at me, don't you think we fit beautif'ly together?
Look at us, can't you see how we shine.
When you look at us, do you notice I'm shivering?
The weather is fine.
But where is the warmth?
Since I grow feverish with the flush that comes ev'ry time he holds me,
nat'rally you'd suppose I'd be warm when I'm hot.
Well, I'm not.
And just look at me, you would think this the cruelest of Decembers.
Look at me, you would think we had snow.
Then he looks at me, and for a moment I melt again;
the embers do glow.
But oh, where is the warmth?
The fire is there
But where is the warmth?
With a little laugh
and a smaller sigh
my beautiful young man,
goodbye.
If I Have to Live Alone
The house seems smaller since she's been gone.
The lights stay dim and the shutters drawn.
But the clock keeps running and time runs on,
and there's time enough has flown
if I have to live alone.
The leaves still rustle, the wind still whines;
the sun shines colder but still it shines.
I do my living between the lines
like the silent times I've known
when I had to live alone.
Before I knew her I had my ways
to fill the hours, to kill the days.
Have a meal at the cafe
ev'ry night at ten;
take a walk, take a nap, perhaps a card game now and then.
I've lived alone before and I can do it again.
I still hear laughter, I still see stars, and if it's true that a smile comes hard,
well, that's the reason that God made scars, to protect us once they've grown.
Let them harden now like stone,
let them harden now like stone
if I have to live alone
