Hello and welcome to this video tutorial. I'm your librarian Brittany and today we're going to be looking for articles in the pub med database.
Now there a couple different ways to search for articles in pub med,
the first is just using the simple search bar at the top.
For example we will be looking for articles that are about
toddlers and their speech development
and possibly the delays they encounter.
First type in
toddler
and type in AND in capital letters.
That let's the database know that you're searching for the word toddler and
what we will type in next which is speech development
and type in AND again with delays.
Because we want to find articles that are about toddlers and speech development and the delays they might encounter.
Hit search.
So we found
eight articles
which is a pretty good search.
Not too many articles but not to few.
So if we like the article we will click it.
Here we can read the abstract.
If this is an article we own,
you'll see either a link up at the top or
down here at the bottom.
So just click it.
And here's the full article.
Okay another way to search for articles is using MeSH Headings which are medical subject headings.
Go up to his search bar and instead of having pub med highlighted
in the drop down menu select MeSH.
Type in toddler.
Okay so it says there isn't a subject heading for toddler.
That means we need to use other words that are similar, such as putting child.
Here we have a subject heading for child but it's someone 6 to 12 years of age and we're looking for a little younger than that.
But it tells us that someone from 2 to 5 years old
is a child, preschooler.
So let's change the
subject from child
to child preschool.
So let's select child, preschooler
and click over here to add to search builder,
and it'll save it for us over here.
So we'll go back up to the top,
and type in speech.
OK, speech is a subject term that we can search, so we
will click speech, and
click on add to search builder.
And now click search pubmed.
Beacuse we want to start our search broad and then go narrow.
So we found over 2,000 articles.
And that is too many to look at so go to the left hand navigation to narrow that down.
So first we only want full text articles, we don't want articles that are just the abstracts, so let's click
full text available.
So that cut our number down.
We only want articles that were published
within the past 10 years because anything else will probably be irrelevant. Click on 10 years.
We only want articles that are in English, so select English
And you can see that it is cutting away at our number.
Now we have some additional filters that don't show up here but if you click see additional filters you'll find more. So click it and select
ages
and click show.
So we can select what ages of participants we are looking for.
So select infant to 23 months.
And again our number is decreasing.
So now we have only article that deal with toddler age children.
So we can keep selecting more filters.
Like if we only wanted articles about male children, we can select male.
And so you can keep selecting and narrowing until you find exactly what you are looking for.
Well that's all we have for today, thanks for watching!
