Chuck Close was born in Monroe, Washington in 1940.
As a young child he took up drawing. His talent was so promising that his parents even enrolled him in private lessons.
Close attended college and became an accomplished photo-realist painter
Photo-realism is exactly what it sounds like: a painting style that looks as real as a photograph
In graduate school, Close decided to paint huge portraits. At the time realistic artwork was not in vogue.
From this point on Close worked exclusively in large, zoomed-in portraits.
In 1988, Chuck Close suffered a sudden attack of paralysis.
He was quickly paralyzed from the neck down and remains wheelchair bound to this day.
This setback has not stopped Chuck Close. He has created numerous paintings, prints, and photographs and is one of the most famous active artists alive today.
Chuck Close is currently living and working in New York City.
