EBAN: I get a lot out of, um, just having good connections and new connections with
a community of people that I wouldn’t otherwise have an opportunity to interact with very
much, and that’s the community of people that we’re serving.
TOM: I don’t really think of it in terms of volunteering as such, I just see it as
being able to help because if I was in a situation where somebody cooked for me I’d say yes
for sure. FREEMAN: My name’s Freeman, I’m one of
the founders of Interaction. We started the organisation with the idea that young people
of faith from different religious backgrounds shared a common vision for the kind of world
that they wanted to see, for the kind of community that we wanted to be part of. The project
that we’re doing at the moment is called the Fast Supper. It’s not just a food van,
it’s actually a restaurant on wheels. So we arrive that night with fresh fruit and
vegies, we arrive with a hot meal and it’s about the community that’s around, it’s
about the people and it’s about the dignity of service. It’s not just a hand out, we’re
actually creating a sense of community in that space.
EBAN: My name’s Eban, I’m the project coordinator for Fast Supper. I guess I’m
also like the go-to guy. That’s probably the easiest way to explain it.
The last 8 or 9 months we’ve been running every week on a Wednesday night, um fresh
fruit and vegetables and a hot meal, we get the fresh fruit and vegetables from an organisation
called SecondBite and so every night, every night that we go out to SecondBite which is
a warehouse out in Kensington, and pick up the fresh fruit and vegetables, and bring
them down, sort them out, bag them up, get them all ready and loaded into the van, and
then also go down to the Hare Krishnas, who will provide our hot meals and bring them
out into the van as well. The volunteers will start to arrive just before
we go out, and then we’ll all head off together and start the service.
TOM: My name’s Tom and I volunteer at Interaction Food Van. In the beginning we started out
quite small, we were wondering of the best system of how to do it and gradually more
and more people have been involved, people have been donating more and more food to the
point now where, amazingly we actually have food spare at the end of the night which is
a great thing. It’s actually really easy to do and it’s
fun so it’s a really fun night and if we can help people out then great. Just do it,
what are you waiting for? EBAN: This is a chance to really be out with
the community and be with a community that they wouldn’t otherwise get a chance to
sort of have much interaction with. FREEMAN: If you put a little bit into volunteering
you’ll get a little bit out. If you put a lot of yourself into it, you’ll
get so much more.
