You are in a marriage, and you're now at a point where you're contemplating divorce.
But, you're not really interesting in going to court if you don't have to, in fact, if
it were possible, you'd like to do the whole thing by mail. Hello, I'm Robert Todd, and
I'm here to answer the question, Can I Get Divorced By Mail? Well, this is, of course,
going to vary from state to state, but generally speaking, whether you go to court or whether
you can do it by mail is going to be from your perspective. If you are the petitioning
party, that is the one seeking the divorce, and you file the divorce, you are ultimately
going to be required to go to court and make an appearance, and demonstrate that the court
has jurisdiction over you and your spouse, and the marriage. You are also going to have
to demonstrate that the marriage meets the requirement, that it is dissolved or dissolvable,
and you're going to have to set forth for the court that the assets and liabilities
have been addressed. If there are children involved, who's going to have the primary
custody? Who's going to have visitation, who's going to pay support, who's going to pay support
between the spouses, and so forth. If you are the respondent, against whom the divorce
is being sought, you may be able to simply sign the papers, sign the waiver, and not
appear. I'm Robert Todd, and thank you for watching.
