The project was started because there was and still is a need
for financial literacy in our community.
Several studies prove that children should be taught
and introduced to the concept of saving money in primary school;
how to manage money and make spending plans.
So we created this project just for primary schools,
but it was extended to all other school levels.
Depending on the knowledge and age
of the people with whom we are working,
we explore concepts at different levels.
Basically, it is always about managing money,
how to make spending plans, how to save money.
We teach kids these ideas through games
and by playing with them.
We turned visiting the museum into a game.
They are invited to do various activities
which they have to pay for with the capital they receive.
For an hour, they manage the capital to do the activities in the museum.
They start in the educational services room and we play a game.
We ask three questions, each worth a note.
A €5, €10 and a €20 note.
They have €35 to spend on the museum activities.
Then we enter a vault.
They have to guess the code and get inside
and watch the movie: Earning, Spending and Saving.
To see the movie, they must pay €5.
After the movie, we go to another room where we explore the map of Europe
to understand what the Euro is. They pay 10€ for it.
Lastly, the most expensive activity, worth 20€,
a visit to the Banknote Museum,
where they see the notes we were talking about
and their history: the reis, the escudo and the euro.
Lastly, on an interactive wall
we explore this note and play some games.
These are mostly observation and interpretation games.
We went through a door which had a code.
We learned some things about coins and notes.
It was fun.
MODUS OPERANDI
In this project they visit the museum. The museum goes to schools.
This is a continuous project. We try to visit schools more than once.
We develop these concepts during the school year.
If they also want to participate in the next year, the project continues
and we will further develop their knowledge
until they reach the 12th school year
and are totally comfortable managing their money.
They always learn something in these games.
In only one hour we cannot teach them much about financial literacy
but we encourage their curiosity to find out more.
They take textbooks with them to use in class.
They can use them at home with their parents.
Why do I bring my students here?
Because money is part of the 1st year curriculum.
It's a recreational activity and children learn better this way
than in the classroom, so we decided to come here.
We are training future citizens,
they must know how to manage their money.
Considering the crisis we are experiencing,
they must know the importance of saving, spending and earning money.
Lots of fun. Because we play games we like.
By playing learning games we can learn a lot.
By watching movies and stuff...
If we don't save money,
if we spend all our money
on stuff we don't need,
we won't have any money left to buy the stuff we need.
GROWTH
We aim to continue the project and make it sustainable
so that it may continue and grow,
welcoming children, university students and the elderly.
To expand it to other groups.
To keep it going for a long time and to keep improving it.
