welcome to the program we've got a very entertaining interview lined up for you
today in the third segment so I'm glad you're with us
let's talk about Texas lewis's new home state of course I'm joined by producer
louis mo Tommy from the Austin Texas bureau
up the David Pakman show the AP is reporting that a federal judge
has ruled that new abortion restrictions passed by the Texas Legislature
are unconstitutional and should not take effect
as planned today District Judge
levy equal issued its decision yesterday following a three-day trial
over whether the state can restrict when where
and how women obtain abortions within the state a Texas
lawyers for Planned Parenthood and for other abortion-related providers
argued that the regulations did not protect women
and would shut down one-third the abortion clinics in Texas completely
obvious and expected
the texas Attorney Generals office was arguing the other side and they said
that the law was going to protect women
and it was going to also protect the lives above fetuses
state officials are expected to file an emergency appeal love the order to the
five circuit
Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans we don't yet know what is
expected to happen there
if these restrictions are enacted Louis they would be among the toughest in the
nation
you know every time I read an article like this and I recognize the importance
of letting you the audience know that this is going on
I always wish that we didn't have to deal with these types of issues
abortion gay marriage the basics of what counts is science
for school curriculum et cetera but we do have to talk about them louis'
because even if
in many countries around the world they see us having these arguments in the US
and they wonder what the hell is going on why are these people
even arguing over these things as opposed to figuring out how to get
health care for everybody how to
create more jobs improve the economy improve education we have to do because
there are at that particularly at the state and local levels
completely extreme and outrageous proposals like this that will have
real tangible damaging effect on people
yeah I mean when you think about it abstractly you
like he said how is this even part of the discussion why's this happening at
all i mean how are these issues
up helping are economic situation how are they helping to stabilize the
country
and they're not it really should never be part of the conversation
unfortunately we have to deal with it
and if we wanted to actually have just the economic arguments
and and conversations that Lewis is talking about the conservative position
on most in the social issues actually would be worse for the economy
as has been demonstrated when it comes to abortion
when it comes to marriage equality and other issues
we would actually have economic benefit from adopting the progressive position
on these issues
this is a good thing in Texas we'll see if it sticks now that it's
expected to be appealed to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals
you know will follow it
