Here at UWE
what we like to do is run quite a lot of our courses
as if they're jobs in the real world so there are newsdays we send our students
out reporting
we make films for clients we get them into production meetings so it's really
like
working in the business so whether you're interested in colour grading editing
documentary making the course is brilliant because
there are tutors that are specific to those areas and that are still making stuff what we're
really encouraging students to do
is to think about the creative use of media to tell stories
to say something that they care about stories that are gona connect to an
audience
and that's a key skill for the industry here at UWE we have
fantastic facilities and this is all available
for the students so they have got edit suites they've got grading suites we've got
TV studio we've got a Drama Studio to invest in state-of-the-art technology and
this isn't just equipment that's out there in the industry the moment it's future
technologies so we have
we have red cameras we have DaVinci colour grading sweets we have a whole
choice of different edit platforms I already get a sense for people outside
that um the kind of kit that we're using is uh top class what's brilliant is that
we're getting the experience of doing that and we're also providing
kind of material for our own portfolios
placements are really important for the students here
at UWE we believe that it makes them more employable when they graduate UWE
has alot of links into industry
um and through that I've been fortunate enough to work for the BBC which has proved invaluable
we have BBC producers and directors and
editors coming down to talk to the students to run master classes
it's a BJTC accredited course so it's accredited by the Broadcast Journalism Training
Council
which recognises the experience of the lecturers and the level to which we're
taught
it means we're much more likely to be able to get jobs in the industry
so right now we're in a place called the Pervasive Media Studio its a unique
partnership I cant think of anywhere else in the country where there's this
particular combination of research
students academics engineers and inventors that are coming together to create
the media future
we aren't trying to do educate people and train people for the next year or the
next two years
we wana actually be training people for the next ten or fifteen years
and we think that having a partnership with a place like this is a really
important way of getting that knowledge back into the lecture theatre
we really understand what it is the industry
requires because we've been in the industry and so what we really want to do is give
the students the greatest opportunities to get that job to be able to understand
what employers are looking for what the broadcasters are actually looking for
and those normally come down to those three things storytelling
great craft skills but also they'll need to have great business acumen
personally i found the course here so great because it gives you a freedom
to um be creative in your own ideas but there's also alot of support there
the lecturers are great the equipments great the city's great and the
campus is brilliant
