Why do women eat placenta after birth?
It’s a weird fad. My first thought is to make childbirth even more disgusting that
it already is.
Childbirth isn’t disgusting. You are bringing life into the world.
Have you ever seen an afterbirth? And that is the placenta these women are eating.
Animals eat the placenta.
Yes, many do. And many animals like rabbits also eat their poop, but that doesn’t mean
we should, too.
The placenta is high in protein and nutrients.
It’s rather interesting how many of these women ate organic, locally sourced produce
and avoided GMO foods – and then eat a body part.
It is supposed to be enriching.
Breast milk is literally made to be consumed by another person. The placenta isn’t.
I read about a woman who takes the placenta, dries it, grinds it up and sends it back in
pill form to consume.
I can imagine the mail man’s horrified reaction when he finds out what he’s handling. If
she wants protein and nutrients, eat a steak!
Steak isn’t healthy.
Do you know how many women used to die in childbirth? Up to a 10% chance of dying, every
time she gave birth.
Childbirth is much safer now.
But hospitals won’t let you take the placenta home to eat, so she has to give birth at home
or with weird midwives to get it. More risk for her and the baby.
Why do you think the trend started?
Because diaper-free parenting was too inconvenient? Because breastfeeding in public and changing
diapers in public no longer had shock value?
It’s supposed to fight the baby blues.
Go get B vitamins or a nanny to help. Cannibalism isn’t necessary, and it introduces disease
risks.
Fine, I’ll tell my girlfriend she can load up on all the meat she wants. And if she won’t,
then maybe she’ll go for vegan Riblets.
