Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta will resign on this Friday after his own party voted to
replace him with its rising star and leader, Matteo Renzi.
Letta decided to throw in the towel Thursday after the Democratic Party, the largest party
in the ruling coalition, supported a call by Renzi for a more ambitious government to
pull Italy out of its economic difficulties. Letta plans to tender his resignation to President
Giorgio Napolitano on Friday. Napolitano is then expected to call on Renzi to form a new
administration.
