Hey everyone. Welcome to "The Daily"
Today is Thursday, June 23rd. It is the one year anniversary since the United
States beat Algeria with that last minute goal from Landon Donovan at the 2010 World
Cup. It seems only fitting that this is the day
after Landon Donovan played a huge role in getting a victory for the US against Panama
in the Gold Cup semifinal. It was Clint Dempsey that got the actual goal.
It was set up by Donovan with a beautiful cross into the box where Dempsey just slotted
it home from the far post. The whole play was actually set up by Freddy
Adu of all players, who came on as a second half sub.
As did Landon Donovan, who didn't get the start after US Coach Bob Bradley went with
the same starting lineup that beat Jamaica in the previous game.
A huge win for the United States. They move on to the final where they're going
to get that final we've all been hoping for, US, Mexico.
The win set the stage for the second match of the day on Wednesday in Houston.
Mexico against Honduras. Chicharito didn't look so great during regular
time, but in extra time they got it done. A 2-nil victory over the Hondurans.
Aldo De Nigris and Chicharito with the goals. During the actual game, it looked like Honduras
was going to pull off a massive upset. Sporting Kansas City's Roger Espinoza got
another start. It looked very good until he was sent off.
That's the way it goes sometimes. Speaking of Espinoza, you can actually hear
a terrific interview with him on Tiro Libre, the podcast from footballmls.com
Go to mlssoccer.com/tiro-libre for that. Now Mexico moved on to the final with the
US. Saturday night at 8:30pm Eastern on Fox Soccer
Channel and Univision. It's the third final in a row between the
US and Mexico. We think back to 2007 when Benny Falehaber's
volley wonder for the US against the Mexicans. In 2009, when Mexico won 5-nil in the final.
This one of course, for all the marbles. The winner will go to the Confederations Cup
in 2013. Make sure you check it out on Saturday night
at 8:30pm. It's on Fox Soccer and on Univision.
We will have a live chat here on mlssoccer.com There was also action in MLS on Wednesday
night. Not quite as exciting as the Gold Cup stuff.
It ended up nil-nil between Philly and Sporting Kansas City.
Goal keeper Jimmy Nielson from Sporting KC was the hero on the night.
A couple of massive saves, particularly over the first half.
Philadelphia, they were still trying to find that attacking mix that would work.
Young Jack McInerney getting the start alongside Carlos Ruiz, who is back from Gold Cup duty.
With Le Toux and Paunovic in midfield actually. So a lot of attacking options, but they still
were not able to get the goal. In the later match, it was Chicago hosting
Reals Salt Lake. Also ended up nil-nil.
Frank Klopas stays undefeated since he's taken over for the Fire.
Reals Salt Lake had a couple of good chances, but they weren't able to put them away.
Carl Warner with a decent chance. Great save from Shawn Johnson in the first
half especially. The MLS action continues tonight from Seattle's
newly named Century Link Field. The Sounders will be hosting the New York
Red Bulls. Of course, the Red Bulls coming off that draw
at Portland 3-3. That last minute penalty from Dwayne de Rosario.
They will be without Thierry Henry despite Erik Solares please to have that red card
rescinded. Seattle on the other hand, coming off that
win in Toronto. 1-nil, was Freddy Montero with that free kick
to get the victory. It's gonna be a packed house tonight.
It's on ESPN2 at 10pm Eastern time. We're going to have a live chat here on mlssoccer.com
for that one as well. Join us for that.
A little bit later on, ExtraTime Radio. You will be able to get that on iTunes and
BuzzSprout or on mlssoccer.com/extratime Join us for that.
We'll talk to you on "The Daily" tommorrow.
