Are stem cells in patients with osteoarthritis less able to differentiate?
J Mary Murphy and colleagues published an interesting article in Arthritis and Rheumatism.
They found the proliferative capacity of osteoarthritis patient-derived stem cells was clearly lower
than that of normal controls. The results suggest that the loss of proliferative capacity
of cells from OA patients is not age- or site-dependent, but is associated with disease. This conclusion
may impact clinical applications that involve the use of autologous cells for tissue engineering
or for gene delivery. The authors stated that the altered capacity of these cells may result
from changes in cytokines and growth factors associated with OA.
Comment: Very interesting finding that could have implications in treatment.
