During my visit with family, we walked along a small lake near their home.
As it got darker I was told that we should get back soon before it gets too dark, and that the River Dogs
would be out soon anyway. I laughed and took it as a joke while we started walking back
To my surprise, my cousin pulled a dead rabbit out of his bag and hung it from a branch.
I thought that was odd, and asked "How long have you been carrying that thing around."
He replied, "Since this morning! It's just a precaution but, the dogs will take it and head back instead of messin with us"
I chuckeld slightly and said, "Sure yea, the scary river dogs need their rabbit huh". He didn't laugh. Instead he looked at me and
said, "Yea, they can be scary."
At this point I couldn't tell if he was messing with me or being serious. When we got back, he had his uncle Boon tell me HIS story about the
River Dogs. I think he could tell I didn’t take him seriously.
So Boon, grabbed a couple beers and sat with us on the porch, while he told us his story about the
time he was out at the lake at night, and saw his first River Dog.
On night, Boon was out with a friend drinking beer by the lake while they did some night fishing.
His friend said that he was heading back since it was getting late. Boon decided
to stay, since he still had more to drink and nothing to do.
While his friend was packing up he told Boon not to stay out too late, and that the lake
can be dangerous at night. His friend finished up and left boon to himself.
Then, Boon went on about how people who spend a lot of time in the great outdoors get much
more in tune with their baser instincts. Something about being stalked that you can
feel instinctively, and that makes your skin tingle.
A lot of hunters say they don't like focusing on their prey too hard for too long because
it seems like the animal can sense it. With practice it can be sharpened, but in an intense
situation it seems to come alive no matter how dormant that instinct is.
About an hour after his friend leaves he said that he started feeling a bit uneasy, like
he was being watched. This feeling grew over time and started getting so intense that he
said it felt like someone was breathing on the back of his neck and right about to grab him.
For some reason he thought it would be a good idea to pack up, and go around the lake and
set up on the other side. When he got there, he set up his chair and
looked out on the lake. He said the feeling wasn't completely gone, but had gone away a bit.
While he was hanging out he heard the sound
of water moving in the distance. Not like some small fish were moving, but more like
a person was slowly walking around the shallow part of the water across the lake.
Then, he heard the howling and barking of what sounded like a couple of wolves.
He sat quietly, and listened to them for about 10-15 minutes when he decided to call it a night.
As he started leaving, he said the feeling of being watched was getting worse again.
He was putting his stuff together when he noticed that he must have left the fish that he
caught, back on the other side of the lake. He was so pissed he forgot them and stood
there looking across the lake at his old spot when chills ran down his body.
In the low moonlight he could see what looked like 2 large Jet Black wolves staring right at him.
They were standing in the same spot he and his friend were before.
They never broke eye contact with him as he stood there starring. He said the only reason
he could make out what they were was because their fur was so shiny. It was almost as if
they had just came out of the water. Their eyes were slightly reflecting the moonlight
which is how he could tell they never stopped staring in his direction.
He could be exaggerating but he said it felt like they were staring straight into his eyes,
waiting for him to make a move. He decided to take off leaving everything behind.
When he took his first step backwards towards his truck they sprinted forward into the water
straight in his direction. He said that one of them made a very loud and deep growl as it ran
To his surprise they both leaped in air, and
dove straight into the water sending large waves around them. After they jumped in, they
disappeared under the water, and there was no sound or movement.
He thought it was so strange that they didn't stay swimming at the top, or that they didn't
run around the lake like a normal wolf or dog would. They both ran into the water and
disappeared heading straight for him, staying under the water the whole time.
He was shocked since he had never seen dogs or wolves do that before. But he also knew
it was time to leave since they looked to be headed in his direction.
He jumped in his truck and drove off.
The next day he went back with a gun and his friend to the spot he was sitting when he
first saw them, see if his stuff was still there. When they arrived they found everything
by the water and completely mangled. His lawn chair was floating out in the water and shredded.
From then on, he said he never goes around the water late at night. If anyone does, he
tells them to have at least 3 or more people, a large fire, and guns.
It's been a long time custom to leave something behind for these things to eat.
Sometimes they toss it in the water or they hang it from a low branch.
A few other people told me similar stories of sightings they had, or attacks they heard of.
But, no one had any stories where they had direct contact with them.
I think it's because many of these people know when it's the right time to leave.
I don't know if this was a coincidence or one of them messing with me, but one night
I was by the fire outside when i heard a howl coming from the direction of the lake. I immediately
thought, "wow. that wolf sounds close." Boon on the other hand looked a little on edge.
While the howling I heard did sound a bit odd and reminded me of boons story,
It could have just be that I never heard an actual wolf howl before.
One odd fact is that wolves weren't common in the area. Boon later added that
only Red and Grey are ever seen, and even those are rare and are usually found deeper in the woods.
The Black wolves however, are always seen in pairs, and seem only to be found in or
around the lake or rivers. That is why many people call them, the River Dogs. . .
