Hi everybody, it's Hooper.
I'm happy, I finally managed to balance all this *** here. I was about to give up !
Today, I'm reviewing you an original soundtrack. But not just any OST : Chrono Trigger.
I don't have to repeat it again : it's sublime, beautiful, great, monumental, ...
All the superlatives would be suitable.
I already explained it in my review of the game, and later in other videos.
According to me, it's a great OST. The peak of video games OST.
Do you remember the track at the beginning of the video ? It's called Singing Mountain.
And it's the only track of the OST which wasn't included in the game.
I don't know why, but this beautiful music - you heard it, it's really a great track -
wasn't in the game, despite it's present on the OST.
Here's the box of the OST. I already showed it in the other video, but let's look at it again.
There are 3 CDs. It was released in Japan in 1995, just after the release of the game.
Composed by... Huh ? It's not written... Composed by Mitsuda, of course.
What ? It's not even written on the back !
I won't open the box, because it's a sealed copy. It's still wrapped in Cellophane.
I have another box just there.
In fact, Mitsuda wasn't the only one who worked on this OST.
There are 64 tracks on this OST.
Mitsuda was helped by Uematsu. It's a long story, I suggest you to find more informations about this.
Mitsuda worked like a galley slave on this OST, which was its first real project.
And he worked so hard he had an ulcer. He got ill. Incredible !
This really proves his passion about his work : falling sick by working too much.
Unbelievable... It commands admiration.
And that's why Uematsu - composer of the Final Fantasy games, of course -
composed for him 10 tracks on the 64 tracks of the game.
That's why we can't really say that Mitsuda fully composed the OST,
even if he composed 54 of the 64 tracks.
We can say that this project is realised 95 per cent by Mitsuda.
That's why I always say it's Mitsuda's OST, even if Uematsu helped him a little.
Anyway, as we could see later with Xenogears and Chrono Cross,
Mitsuda is undoubtedly a genius.
I already made the video editing. This time, it really tore my hair out.
I didn't put the 64 tracks, of course. Otherwise, the video would have been two hours long.
I put about 30 tracks in total.
I chose the ones which represent the best Chrono Trigger in my opinion.
But in fact, there are all great.
Well, not all, but about...
Let's say the three quarters are perfectly mastered.
So I didn't put everything, it would have been too long.
My objective was to make you discover this OST.
It's not my first review of an OST, and it won't be the last.
I just want you to discover it.
Of course, there will be some spoilers.
Today, the 6th of February 2009, Chrono Trigger's DS version is released in Europe.
If you didn't play this game before, and if you want to do it on DS, SNES or emulation, ...
But not on PSOne. DON'T PLAY THE PSONE VERSION !!!
There are loading times every ten seconds, it's unplayable !
I already told it...
So, don't watch this video if you didn't play the game.
There are many spoilers : you'll see all the main characters, all the places, ...
There's even the end of the game !
So please don't watch this video if you want to play Chrono Trigger later.
Oh, I have another thing to show you.
The Brink of Time. I already talked about it in the other video.
It's a Chrono Trigger arranged version disc. Composed by Mitsuda again.
It's mainly in a jazzy style.
I hesitated a lot about including some of these tracks in my video, but I decided to forget about it.
I think I'll present you this OST in another video.
Okay, let's stop here...
Oh, let me just say a word about the DS version. Does it deserves to be played ?
I finished this DS version of the game.
What can I say ?
I don't know...
It's a good ported version. It's not a remake, the game is totally similar.
There are some new features, like two pitiful new dungeons.
One is quite correct, but another is totally useless. It's only made of round trips between two places.
What's the interest of including new elements if they go against the game ?
The good point is that the graphics are identical to the SNES version. Fortunately...
Another good point is that they added the PSOne's full motion videos.
Let's say it's a mix version : we have the good elements of the PSOne version, the FMVs,
without the bad points, the loading times.
So we have the same game that the SNES release, with the FMV of the PSOne release.
There are not many FMVs, about 10 minutes in total.
And if we remove the opening and ending scenes, there's only 5 minutes left.
Don't think you'll have FMV every 10 minutes, we're not in a Final Fantasy game.
There are fery few of them, even if they are beautiful.
There were realised again by our friend Akira Toriyama.
Anyway, you'll see them, because I put them in the video !
The editing really got on my nerves...
Studio 10 crashes every time, there are bugs everywhere, ...
If you want to do videos which are more that 10 minutes long...
Damn, I'm ill.
So, don't use Studio 10. It works very bad, sometimes it doesn't save your work, ...
I can't stand it anymore !
Something which takes one hour will need twice more time because of the software !
Intolerable...
And it's not the first time, it was the same thing with MGS4, Street Fighter Tribute Album, ...
It takes you three times more work everytime !
So, let's continue with the DS version of Chrono Trigger : of course, you can buy it.
Even if there's nothing really new in comparison with the SNES version.
They're making a lot of money with...
Damn, my structure is going to collapse ! Did you see ? On the right...
I think I should stop soon, it's not going to stay balanced very long !
So, the DS version...
Yes, of course, it's a good ported version. If you never played this game before, you can buy it.
Otherwise, you can only play it in emulation.
Buying a SNES cartridge costs the earth today.
Same thing with the Japanese cartridge, and you won't understand anything.
The US cartridge costs about 100 euros nowadays.
*** !
The cartridge you can see in the middle is a modded cartridge with a French ROM from Terminus Traductions.
It's the best of the best : it's the only way to play Chrono Trigger in French on the SNES.
But again, it costs a lot of money.
So the easiest ways to play the game are the DS version or emulation.
According to me, the DS version is... It's quite a shame from Square Enix.
Taking games from 15 years ago, like the Final Fantasy games, Chrono Trigger, without making any modification,
except some dumbs new features - the Monsters Arena is a *** -,
and solding it today 40 euros... 40 euros for nothing ! It's just hot air !
But I still recommand you to buy it because it's the best RPG ever created.
Even if this release is a shame.
I'm of the few people who would have prefered a 3D remake, like Final Fantasy III and IV on DS.
There's also Dragon Quest. Er, I don't remember if Dragon Quest is in 3D...
The game would have lost some of its charm, but it would have a real new feature : the 3D.
I already finished the game 5 or 6 times on my SNES, so such a ported version is not very interesting for me.
The French translation is quite strange : they changed the names of many characters or items,
and even of some places. I didn't understand why...
There are some very strange names. I don't know where did they find such names.
It's doesn't matter a lot anyway.
Oh, another strange thing : the sound on the DS is worse than on the SNES !
That means the SNES' sound processor is better than the DS'.
It's quite logical as the DS is a portable console, but it's quite interesting to notice.
The sound is worse on the DS than on the SNES. No doubt about it.
It's not totally ***, don't be afraid.
But I really recommand you this DS version.
Well, it's already about 11 minutes of video... I don't have anything to say left.
We're the 6th of February, it's a great day : Chrono Trigger is released in DS in Europe. Beautiful !
I let you listen your ears. "Listen your ears" ... ?
Did I forget anything ? No, the video is ready...
Oh, yes : I put some extracts from the Chrono Trigger OAV.
99 percent of the musics you'll hear are the original musics.
There were some remixed tracks for the PSOne version.
There will be just one or two which are not original.
At the beginning, you'll see the opening sequence of the PSOne version,
but I decided to put on the opening theme of the SNES version.
It must be something you've never heard before.
It's the same thing for the ending sequence : PSOne video, SNES music.
There, I think I told you everything.
Have a good time, and see you soon.
