Search for hackers that counter cyber terrorism
A number of South Korean websites were the targets of hacking attacks in the first half
of the year. Such attacks are usually the work of hackers
with malevelont intentions, but there are hackers out there who are fighting the good
fight back,... the so-called "White Hackers". Our Kim Hyun-bin reports on a recent competition
to find the cream of the crop. March 20th, 2013: major broadcasting stations in Korea
are hit hard by cyber terrorism. June 25th, 2013, the anniversary of the start
of the Korean War: the website of South Korea's presidential office, along with other government
sites come under attack. In times like this, with acts of cyberwarfare
on the rise throughout not just Korea but the world, governments are searching for new
ways to defend themselves. One of the ways they're doing that is searching
for computer gurus to play for their team. To find the best of the best, a tournament
was held among so-called "White Hackers" on July 2nd and 3rd in Seoul.
They were tasked with hacking into specialized sites to find a hidden answer and get points.
Twenty-four hours in, Carnegie Melon University's PPP Team came out on top.
"This year's competition was much fiercer than last year, with more teams bringing the
heat."
"It's a lot of fun,... a good challenge. I think most of us did not sleep for the entire
time, but it was well worth it."
A total of 340 teams competed in last year's competition, but this year nearly a thousand
teams fought for the crown. Experts say utilizing White Hackers is a must
these days with hacking incidents on the rise.
There are over 100 hacking incidents each day, and in a year there are more than 30-
thousand new viruses. There are no systems that can keep up. It is up to humans to stop
the spread."
A team of North Korean hackers did participate in this year's competition, but got knocked
out in the preliminaries. Kim Hyun-bin, Arirang News
