My name is Cynthia Olivo, and my first week of college was really fun. I...I remember the first day.
Since I was the first person in my family to go to college along with my cousin Tammy,
there was a huge entourage that traveled with me from my hometown of San Jacinto
to my college in San Bernardino, Cal State University.
It was my mother, my three younger sisters, my god-mom, my godfather, my aunt, uncle,
it was really a huge fun time, and they dropped us off at college.
We settled in and participated in a week-long full of helpful events.
I was a pretty involved student in high school, and I continued that in college.
I rushed a sorority, and the people I met in the sorority were very helpful to me in acclimating me to,
not only the university, but also the town and the city, so I had a really great time.
I...I do remember having a conversation with my grandmother, who was concerned about me being so far away from home,
and she said that, you know, it would have been better for me to stay at the community college
because it would have been safer...but it was the experience that I had with, you know, along with my cousin,
we were able to pave the way for our siblings to go to college away from home
and to break the family tradition of...especially the females having to stay at home rather than,
you know, go away to college so...I enjoyed it.
My first week of college at Claremount Graduate University, where I received my Ph.D. was...
you know...it was different because it was a small private university.
I remember receiving a lot of personal attention and being invited to the president's mansion to have a nice reception,
and it was also a lot of fun, and I also remember one of the servers knew me because I was her daughter's mentor,
and so I got the best treatment of everybody at that reception.
That it. I think that's, you know, summarizes my experience. Thank you.
