The Pasco County Library System (Hudson, FL) for outstanding public relations,
a John Cotton Dana Award for Rockus Maximus: Battle of the Bands,
a library- and community-sponsored Battle of the Bands competition.
Rockus Maximus truly maximized social media, making great use of
YouTube, MySpace, Vimeo, and Vizio Online Polling,
and featured a kick-off concert, an online contest featuring a video documentary
of the competing bands, which was viewed over 10,000 times,
and the Battle of the Bands live concert, which was attended by over 600 teens
all for the modest budget of $3,800, covered by donations.
In the six months following Rockus Maximus, teen attendance at library programs increased 48%
and the number of teens signing up for library cards increased by 12%.
Accepting on behalf of the library, Paul Stonebridge (Teen Services Manager),
James Francosky (Library Assistant, Youth Services), Karen Correa (Youth Services Coordinator),
and Kevin Griffith (Reference & Virtual Services Coordinator)
Paul: Hi there, we would like to thank, of course, the H.W. Wilson Foundation
and the American Library Association for providing
a chance at a spotlight for such things for library to show their innovation
in a kind of dark times for libraries.
and we would also like to tell you, we are proud to say that we continued our Rockus Maximus: Battle of the Bands this year.
In fact we had, instead of 600 people we had almost 800 teens attend this years' event,
and we were able to extend our reach beyond just the local community into
a fund-raising effort, since people were so supportive, we thought we would
support our community in return. We raised over $2,000 for the All Children's Hospital Cancer Research Foundation,
inspired by one of our teens who has supported our Battle of the Bands, who has twice survived brain cancer.
So, we are proud to say that it's continuing, and we hope to continue it for many years to come after this.
Thank you very much, and congratulations to all the other winners. Thank you.
