I already knew they he had potential,
and so I felt like that it was my job, once I became his mentor, is to
help him unlock the potential.
It just gives me that
extra push.
Yeah, that extra push and that extra drive that says, "Yes you can do it."
I look after Jabari like he's, like I say he's my little brother,
and so
when I throughout my day, I got to think to myself
not just about even Jabari, but, like, other people.
Anything I do, is in the right example.
It has given me an opportunity to look at someone
that has been in my same shoes, and still is in my same shoes.
He's made a major improvement.
I've seen the growth.
I think that is what is the main purpose of the program, to see growth in African American males on campus.
In the next few semesters, I see myself guiding the next man the same way Harold did me,
showing him all the right ways.
Getting on you.
Getting on me. Make sure he's stays on his p's and q's. Yes, at
the same time it gives being a confidant,
being a support system too. There's not that many of y'all. Right,
there's not. There's a shortage, so
___ come and get it is rare.
But we did, so,
I mean, you just go and team up and
tackle the world.
I definitely say no is not an option ever.
It isn't.
Even though he is now 24, as of last week,
there's still a lot of things he has not experienced yet,
whereas I've gone through it.
I've lived it. I've done it. So, hopefully, seeing me and how I act and behave through it
is giving him a mental picture of, well this is possibly a way that I can go ahead and
handle the situation next time.
Everything from taking him out to his birthday, for the birthday because the
party that he had was kind of whack. I used to dress like a hooligan.
I remember when I first met you, you were dressed like a hooligan.
He always does any and everything that I ask him to do, if it's within his power.
Sometimes if it's outside of his power, you know
he'll do his best to make sure it happens.
Uh, hey, Greg, I kind of need a letter of recommendation, letter of reference.
How many of those have you filled out?
I'm just going to start using the same one over and over again and just change the organization.
It's helped take a look at
myself before I react because I'm very reactionary,
and having someone that looks to you,
not necessarily looks up, but will look and see your actions.
I can't sit there and say,
"Well you need to do this," but then I'm turning around and doing the exact opposite.
It's nice to see someone who was going for a doctorate. I had, you know, I don't know very many doctors,
but, you know, but he's going for his doctorate, still in school, working hard, even at his
tender, ripe old age.
It's just one of those where we sit,
and we just talk, and we process things, and
it's not fixed.
It's not scripted.
Our, that's why I say our relationship has progressed from being mentor/mentee, to
something being of a friendship, because it's just natural.
You want a hug?
Get away from me.
What are you wearing?
I had not seen him. -But I saw him.- I don't know how he pulled this feet off.
I didn't know where he was. I wasn't even in the open space for long, and
some kind of way, he saw me and was like,
"You need to go change. Now."
He trying to be shy on camera. He hugs me.
Yeah, I hug you.
I'm not going to hug you on camera though.
It's one of those things that
comes naturally. You see someone that needs something, or you see someone that isn't
quite being guided correctly or just doesn't know, and
you do what you can say help facilitate that growth.
It's manhood. -Bro hug?-
But it's okay if he doesn't want to. -No, come on. Bring it in.-
