richard great to have the on today so much i want to talk to you about uh...
it's unclear if this is going to happen but with chris christie and possibly
some other republicans becoming mainstream maybe we don't know if this
will happen yet
and being more moderate on social issues
progressive democrats are going to are think after i'd just some of the
messaging particularly on economic issues
to maintain a distinction from republicans because we're going to see
two parties that are getting closer and closer you get a potentially so let's
start is broadly speaking
how should that be done on economic issues where really the big distinctions
that democrats can continue to draw
if republicans moderate on the social issues
oversight for having me out there that i really appreciate it very beautifully
record people democrats have to do a better job of the sort of isolated
issues of making a kitchen table we republicans have done for
i think general of decades and decades and still good at making the message
that lead to the people and i think there's progress isn't so much time i
think it's got a call a policy wonk very or soak into the policy into the
percentages into the constant
even more so this is how it back to you at all
there's nobody out there in america but wants to cut pre-k program right now we
want to cut pre-k funding but we don't isolate pre-k permitted to attract me
like you're gonna hurt alot johnny from going to school
and i'll bring that homes you just you can set up
opus of course that means you know experience i fear if i believe that they
would have to make it real
on impact well i think sometimes
were right all that we want this to cope with the progress of the radical right
on the market at membrane on policy we were wrong is the role of telling the
story were wrong on the message and i think if we can do a better job of
articulating a message in economics it's real
comedic talents and you can feel tangible that will blow your load
stalled republicans in elections in the election just destroyed and when it
comes to people
there's some issues like the sequestered that i think democrats have had somewhat
of a problem on the right if we go back
gay marriage abortion
there is a lot of clarity
from progressive democrats on these issues they just it's absolutely clear
both from from those
uh... putting out the messages and from the voters receiving the messages but on
the sequestered things are a lot more modeled
in principle progressives wanna maintain funding for social programs
want to shrink the size of the military we see defense spending in the number of
cases around the world of something problematic
now the sequester cuts kind of included both of those things
and i thought that this applies the republicans to the messaging on what are
we for or against this and why was very modeled in my opinion
i didn't do it right i think we can to travelocity articulating what pentagon
cuts where there is a i'm going to add to your point david
although we talk about solutions to sequester or the quote-unquote balanced
approach
what progressives don't do well in others we'll talk about what do the
balance the program to say it balanced approach at that doesn't solve anything
article publicly what republicans are now starting to win this argument or
they want to raise taxes again what we're not raising taxes on deal it is
soaring many of the loop holes that the old millionaires and billionaires
incorporates the depended upon too you know kato taxes so that we do a better
job of talking about
we're going to close the simple
this will blow over benefits people who make over this amount of money if you're
one of those americans that don't make over this amount of money losing
outsourcing to get rid of it all together and we would do a better job
isolating what people's about putting but i think was newburgh we will be
buried on our side i think we'll see those poll numbers
double waterpolo quadruple because of the let me agree here
but here's a billionaire should not be gil have tax havens
that the saddest part about the sequester discussion is that when we
look last week i think it was in a blind poll
that *** people without saying
president obama's plan or house republicans plan to send these are the
plans
the most progressive option that was being proposed on the sequester was by
far the most popular it was even most it equally popular with republicans as the
house republican plan so the the planet itself appeal to people
for better or for worse it's getting lost in the labels at are just don't
know how
progressives can get around that because there are negative connotations
associated
with party lines have become it that's the way it is things are partisan how
can you get around that time
i was a great point are date appears to be right on blindfolded
our policies do better but because of the labels that because is a test of
president bomber in tupelo c_e_o_ *** durbin n_f_l_ c_i_o_ then you know it's
quote what possibly consider negative by republicans oppose it won't work because
they had his negative connotations connected with those people on the right
side of the aisle salman expect is by tell a story a little bit better instead
of using what i call
grasses hosta diesel needing little progress or grass roots in nature we see
our communication strategy in a media strategy is a grasshopper down
antigua also resort turn
so i think all eternity hourglass up so instead of communicating
top-down duplicate bottom often do you use some of our you know smaller
portions of our storytellers right so if you have air traffic controllers were
gonna get parole in a couple days why are we hearing from actual people who
are going to promote and you'll be hearing from how they're going to deal
with the fact that they're going to lose one day ok every week
or one that hearing from one of the parents of the children to die headstart
right as a result those stories
them both policies resonate with the people of all because they can talk to
you can feel the air traffic controllers and they can feel the mothers they
missed a couple of because a child novels and start but instead what we
have used by our political elected leaders were telling the story
and you know if they can talk more as a result
to progressive boats and some people i work with
wpspan all the top of the world armpit represen obama nancy pelosi all you need
is not
but as do as much good has been in thirty seconds of a mother whose child
pick up and start or somebody who's you can't touch feel
all day to you can identify with that relate to the related like you know the
political too you know questionnaires are lookin served on a really good job
of telling one personal story on social issues at least
and really
taking that one story and getting up ton of impact with it more so than really
they should if we were having logical discussion
uh... and maybe right maybe the maybe the the the telling the the personal
stories as a way that the of democrats can get some of that momentum back
italy when i think it will be on some other personal story we will do what
what happened blessed media world is that we look at this echo chamber
verizon were all talking to you know what i'm talking to you to get
commercial talk to me and that's why or universe only so big
right so we need to break out of our universe and try to go out to those of
the bills that listen to rush limbaugh solarz larson in the city all those are
shockingly because a lot of those people you know this was john kennedy and rush
limbaugh everyday illnesses that describes all those particular policies
and if we give each of them said was that your next-door neighbor's child and
kicked out of head start
or two doors down from the air traffic control isn't for a lovely day
in bellevue blackwell i don't know what's happening in my backyard let's
change this let's make it let's change must look let's try to change this to
make a difference on this i think what you begin to see
all of the times is
when you start to have a telnet conversations progressives do a lot
better
of progressives when a lot more i think one of those who saw that we've seen
that happen is in the development particularly would appear to be our
communication itself he recalls unpleasant how students thousands talked
about housing species
that read like that
or back chamber has laffer maybe even have a lot of what the president not
because the president by more so because you know they're friends doing it will
because their friends tell me why isn't boring this election deported
