My name is Travis Griffin. I'm the program director for the office of diversity programs within the College
of Engineering and I'm here to talk to you just a little bit about Breakfast of Champions.
This is our third year hosting the event. It's an event that's for multicultural
students who have been admitted to the College of Engineering, having an opportunity
to come up for the weekend with their parents, also family to see the
College of Engineering, but also see UT. Many of the students
within this category have not had an opportunity to have a chance to see the
campus. But more particularly to learn about the College of Engineering and some of the different
disciplines about it. This year we actually highlighted three different laboratories.
The Materials Science and Engineering lab was actually hosted by Dr.
Duscher, working with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, we worked with
Dr. Lee Han and working with the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
Department we worked with Erin Wills within CURENT. One of the
highlight tools that students got a chance to see was a virtual simulation
laboratory by the Center for Transportation
Research. The students actually had the opportunity to see the
different types of behaviors and different types of outcomes impacted on the
highway, from texting on your phone to actually other distractions that actually may be going
on. The goal of the visit is really for UT, but more particularly the
College of Engineering and the departments to showcase our very best. We hope that the
students were able to become more familiar with the UT campus, gain additional
information not only just about the College of Engineering, but about the different student services, and
also learning a little bit more about the successes, the struggles, and also some of the
pending projects that could be in store for the future.
