The topic was cells which is one of the five key ideas
at Key Stage 3 in science
and it's also a topic that's very difficult for the children
in terms of the literacy demand
because there's a lot of new terminology
that even very bright children find difficult to apply accurately.
So the tasks I chose today were all there designed to support
and encourage the correct use and correct terminology
of the scientific words within a topic.
I chose matching activities because that can be worked in small groups
that's done in consultation
so the child doesn't feel they're constantly being tested themselves
and they can discuss ideas around the key words
and check their understanding.
I also use missing vowels because rather than do a spelling test,
it's a quick, accurate way to check the children's understanding
and check their recognised spellings.
I also ask them to do a labelling exercise
where it takes the words we've already introduced in the lesson
in the lesson and checks their recall of them,
and if they can put them in the appropriate place
and apply the words that they've used correctly.
