You've decided to go into business for yourself and by yourself, but you are curious as to
what you have to do to form a sole proprietorship. Well the first thing is this is going to vary
from state to state, but generally doing business as a sole proprietorship is simply doing business
by yourself. If you are not forming a limited liability company an LLC, and you are not
forming a corporation and you are simply doing business by yourself, you are already doing
business as a sole proprietorship. And there really isn't any paperwork to file for a sole
proprietorship. But even doing business as a sole proprietorship is going to require
that you check with your state statutes and local county ordinances to see what licenses
and permits you are going to need and perhaps the best way to do that is to contact your
local office of the small business administration. And they can assist you in that regard. You
are also going to have to determine whether you are using a fictitious name and if so
comply with the laws requiring the registration of a fictitious name. I'm Robert Todd and
thank you for watching.
