The thing I like about career development is you can facilitate change
in a real and very positive way Careers education is
one of the most important
jobs I think you could have.
This is my first study
in this field so
I need to have the qualification to work
as a careers advisor.
Well I do have a qualification in careers development already, so its really just building up upon that.
The reason why I got into career development is because I struggled to know
what I wanted to do as a child and the school that I went to didnt have the resources
or the guidence to assist me,
and so I somewhat
accidentally stumbled into career development
and as a result of that I found that
I really enjoyed it and was really passionate about it
and now I'm obviously in the right spot now.
I needed to have a career change of some sort so I was looking to go see a careers advisor myself,
and basically went and asked him
'I want to do what your doing now, so
how should I go about doing that?'
I chose RMIT
honestly because the location
and also for professional accrediation obviously that is important to me so I can recognise this as a
quality career development program.
Most importantly I read through the curriculum
and I really liked it
and I've compared it with
all the other unis that provide the program and
I liked the structure of it
and I liked the way
that it was presented. We do have a three day
residential school where we come to
Melbourne and we learn about
in this particular case scenario counselling so it is an intensive three day counselling workshop
its good to get some contact with
people in the field and form a network
also that we have an opportunity to
go out on a three day placement. I guess the work integrated learning aspect of the
program is really important to me but its incredibily
flexible. I think it is quite flexible
because you present your own timeline
of when most of the tasks are due you can sort of
tailor it to
your freetime and
your availability
It really allows us to
have the freedom to
create our own program
the staff are very very helpful very supportive
most students are working
either full or part time as they are doing the course
and they are obviously quite knowledgable in their fields so
also the content is
very good you
as can see they have put a lot of thought into it. I've done quite a lot of online learning
over the years
done a lot of internal learning and RMIT
has a way of putting it together so I am not
penalized by learning online
I feel like i'm learning
as much as somebody coming to class everyday would be learning
and my lecturers are always there if I ever need assistance. I think what
the program has done for me is given
me a new energy in a field I have worked many years in
the best thing about my job is graduation
seeing people walk across the stage that four years ago you assisted with their career change
you spend
almost half of your time working
so you want to make the right decision
that you get to faciliate real change in peoples lives and
your not changing them your just helping them
change themselves. Thats what I like about careers.
