Are you moving? Here are a few tips to think about before you hire a mover.
Ask family and friends for recommendations.
Shop around: get written quotes from three movers.
Remember, reputable movers won’t quote over the phone.
They will want to inspect your furnishings, so they can give an accurate estimate.
Always get a detailed estimate in writing…
For example, how are costs determined – by the number of boxes, number of hours, or some other method?
Could there be any extra costs? How will they be calculated?
Read the fine print before you sign.
And, when moving day arrives, remember that:
The final costs for the move cannot be more than 10 per cent above the estimate in your contract.
A mover can’t hold your goods to demand extra payment – that’s an unfair practice.
In the moment you may have no choice. But, if you pay,
write on the invoice that you “paid under protest”, then follow up with the company.
If you have a dispute, put it in writing to the company. Keep copies of all related documents.
If you cannot resolve the issue with the company, file a complaint with the Ministry of Consumer Services.
Remember, the cheapest mover is not necessarily the best deal!
Happy moving!
