Hello again, we are still here at Muraviovka Park
The last weeks have been more quite, but see what we have done.
Working conditions got worse - now there are only Kolja and Wieland,
but the thousands of moscitoes are now joined by numerous horseflies.
Breeding period is coming to its end: even those species, which arrived at last, have now big chicks.
We checked now all the falcon nests and were able to ring many chicks of Amur Falcon and Hobby.
Amur Falcons make one of the most exciting journeys during their migartion.
From East-Asia they fly to India, cross the Indian Ocean and winter in southern Africa.
The Red-crowned Cranes bred successfull, too - and not only the pair in the Park's aviary.
A family with two big chicks was observed in the wetlands.
For some species we proofed breeding at Muraviovka Park for the very first time, e.g. for the Chestnut-flanked Whiteeye.
This is the nest of the Chinese Penduline ***. The last time this species was found breeding here in the 1980's.
Another exciting bird was found next to a tern colony: a female Baer's Pochard!
This species is critically endangered, nearly nothing is known about recent breeding sites.
Kolja worked on the Yellow-breasted Bunting, which is also a threatened species.
The collected data about distribution and habitat use will be used to evaluate the species' status on the IUCN Red List.
Migration has started, and mist-netting is getting successfull again. We collected data about moult and ringed many birds which had just fledged.
This is a Siberian Rubythroat in fresh juvenile plumage - soon it will start moulting its body feathers, but some of the Greater Coverts will remain until spring.
Furthermore, we collecta data about parasites and diseases. This bird has a tumor on its bill and eye.
Very soon, our summer school will take place.
Everybody who is interested in birds, nature conservation and scientific field methods is welcome.
In August, we will work again with a bigger team - stay tuned!
