In the afternoon of April 2nd, U.S. Consul General to Rio de Janeiro, Dennis Hearne
attended the change of the guard ceremony at the National Monument to the Casualties of World War II.
During the ceremony, Dennis Hearne and U.S. military authorities
promoted a tribute to the Brazilian Expeditionary Force,
giving a new American flag to the soldiers monument.
Students from the United States Municipal School also attended the ceremony.
In one of the most solemn moments at the event, Brazilian soldiers and U.S. Marines
hoisted the Brazilian and American flags.
During his speech, the Consul General remembered the historical Brazilian role during World War II.
-"It is an honor and a pleasure to pay a tribute to Brazil and their heroes, who since 1957 have this monument
to remember the 25,334 Brazilians who fought in World War II."
-"We thank Dennis Hearne, U.S. Consul General, for giving us the biggest symbol of your nation.
The American flag, in solemn dates will be hoisted alongside flags of other allied countries
who fought against Nazi-fascism during World War II."
