Hi, I'm Marjory Wildcraft
If you only get one thing
From the whole series of segments
That I send you
Get this one principle
I promise you
If you really get this and apply this
This will save you years of time
And save you a whole lot of not having to be frustrated.
The great secret to a green thumb
To having really robust and vibrant plants is fertility
My very first gardens were utter disasters
The plants died with just even random small temperature swings
They were not healthy
They couldn't withstand
A lot of extreme changes
I didn't have very good soil
And the chances are you don't either
Our ancestors knew the value of good soil
Most of those areas have been paved over and grown over
And the chances are you don't have good soil either
The wonderful thing is you can grow soil
Growing soil is just a simple process called composting
And composting is really quite easy
Actually nature does most of the work
In order to get beautiful, lush, green, healthy
Garden vegetables like these
Most of the garden vegetables
That we like to eat
Grow in a rich, fertile soil like this
And this is what you need to have
That is the big secret
Let me show you a couple of examples
That will help really drive this point home
Here is a picture of two trees
And they're in my orchard
They are two Oaks
Same species
The one on the right has dark green leaves
A lot more leaves, a lot of foliage
It's clearly a much healthier
And happier plant
Than the one on the left
The only difference between these two trees
Was they get the same amount of water and sun
And they're in about the same location, obviously
Was that I had a small flock of geese
And in the afternoons
The geese would love to go sit underneath that tree
On the right and rest there
Of course when they were resting
They pooped there
And that tree got additional amounts of fertility
You can see what a huge difference it made
Between these two trees
It's incredible
Having a lot of fertility will make a huge difference in your garden also
Here's another example
I'm going to get more in-depth into this chart and diagram
In a future segment
Where we talk about how much land you need
In order to have a completely sustainable
Grow a completely sustainable diet
For one person
You need at least
Forty 100-square foot beds of space
That's 4,000 square feet of bed space
In order for this to be sustainable
You need to grow your own fertility
If you notice there
More than two-thirds of that garden area
Is just designated
To grow crops to make compost
To keep up and maintain
And keep enriching the soil
And having the fertility that you need
More than two-thirds of your effort needs to be focused on fertility
The really good news is
As you eat vegetables that have grown in this really fertile soil
With lots of minerals and lots of life
The vegetables have lots of minerals
And lots of life
And as you eat it
You get lots of minerals and lots of life
You'll become stronger and healthier
I've experienced this
I know it to be true
I am able to withstand temperature ranges of both heat and cold
That I've never been able to withstand
In my life
Hand-grown food raised in rich soil
And tended with love
Is delicious beyond belief
At some point in your gardening career
You're going to look into a situation like this
Where you get a truckload of free compost
Now most likely this compost is good
But stay with me for a future segment
And I'll show you
A very simple and easy technique
That you can do at home
That will absolutely verify
That there are no harmful herbicides
In the compost
Stay with me
We've actually got a whole bunch of more segments
And we'll be showing you
Lots of creative ways
That you can bring and add more fertility
And that you can grow soil
Remember
Fertility is the big secret
It's the big key to having a green thumb
Having rich and fertile soil
Makes a huge difference
In the amount of bounty
That you can get from your garden
And from your growing
I'm Marjory Wildcraft
And I'll see you on another segment
