Ngati Toa Rangatira or anyone else can't really stop anyone
from performing the haka Ka Mate.
In July, Ngati Toa agreed for the NZRU and the All Blacks
to continue performing the renowned haka of Te Rauparaha.
The matter of the haka is still before the Ngati Toa Board
and the NZRU.
We have only spoken to the NZRU about this sacred institute of ours.
In October, this year the NZRFU
wrote to the Intellectual Property Office
advising that a settlement between the NZRU
and Ngati Toa was almost complete.
Next month, our talks will end and we will take the final decision
to the rest of the country.
In 1915, the All Blacks performed the haka Ka Mate to their opponents.
We will continue to discuss it,
and we will continue to discuss it with our board.
The Intellectual Property Office opposed the application of Ngati Toa
to trademark the haka.
The NZRU hopes to settle this matter before the Rugby World Cup.
