As Korea ushered in the new year... records were set right at midnight.. with
the first baby born and the first tourist arriving to Korea.
Our Connie Lee has more on the first moments of 2013.
As soon as the clock struck 12... the cries of a baby boy were heard at one local hospital.
At 2-point-63 kilograms... this boy is the first baby born in 2013, or as its known in
the Chinese zodiac, the Year of the Snake. After five hours of labor, the boy's mother
was all smiles.
(Korean) "My baby was born on such a meaningful day.
I will raise him to be the light in this world."
The first person to fly into Korea this year was none other than a foreign tourist from
China. She said she's come for the shopping, and
it's her fourth visit to the nation.
(Chinese) "This new year is already bringing me luck,
as I've come to Korea and even received gifts. I'm going to come back next year. Thank you
More than 50 tons of cargo from all around the world... landed on the runway as the first
batch of imports of the year. As the 8th largest trading nation last year...
with a trade volume that's surpassed the 1-trillion-dollar mark for two years in a row,... there are
hopes that the trade surplus will continue in the new year.
(Korean) "For this new year, I hope for much success
in our nation -- and with exports increasing, I hope this year will bring a lot of happiness
to all Koreans."
Along with these first records of 2013, the new year marks a time of new hopes, new wishes
and new beginnings. Connie Lee, Arirang News.
