I could, as a Page, walk in anywhere.
As a visitor, you could walk into the Capitol Building and into any of the buildings.
Now, you couldn’t walk right into the House Chamber. But you could—I could take them in.
I had friends who would come from Oklahoma and came to visit, and I could just take them right in; total, you know, open access.
And there were people who would run the elevators, and it was just a very wonderful experience to be able to just walk in.
I knew all the doormen, and we’d call them by first name, and they knew all of the Members of Congress,
which I eventually got to know. It was quite an undertaking to know that many faces and names.
