Alright now in this clip I am going to show you what an umpire has to do to get a good
line on a foul ball whether it is down the first base line or down the third base line.
This time we are going to go down the third base line. He is behind the plate, the ball
gets hit, he comes up to the corner home plate, he lines himself up right down the line, he
looks at the foul plate, he looks at the line and he takes a good close look to see where
the ball lands. Left side he calls foul, if it is in play and it is a fair ball no call
is made and it is taken for granted that it is in play. Only when the ball is a foul will
you hear the umpire yell foul. Now a long shot goes down the line, it is in the fly
so you are not looking at third base you are looking at the line and it is all the way
back there. All of a sudden you see a puff of smoke that hit the foul line, a foul line
is made out of chalk so you will see a puff of smoke come up if it hits the foul line
and those really close calls you have to look at stuff like that, that little puff of smoke,
on the left side no puff of smoke, foul ball, right side you can see it is a fair ball because
it is on the right side of the line, fair ball. Very important though to line yourself,
get a good line, either way third base or line yourself up down the first base line.
Alright down the line and up against the fence you will see the foul pole, some people call
it a fair pole but that's the technology. If it hits the foul pole, home run. There's
two foul poles, left field and right field.
