I have seven papers in press and I'm one of those people that have like five or six "in preparation." One of my problems is again the procrastination
and I’m definitely realizing here that I can no longer do that. If I had to pick one of my biggest flaws is how I'm not aggressive in publishing.
I have a proposal due Monday, and after that I'm really going to work hard to get those publications out because actually Whitfield, Jim, he's almost getting a little upset with me
like "Josephine," yet he would never yell at me; he's so kind, he's so mild-mannered, but my last correspondence with him was like "Josephine, you have to get your papers out."
It's definitely something that I'm going to work on because you can't get a job if you don't have papers, even if I have seven papers out, it's not enough.
To be published, that's how you prove yourself, almost. That's the metric by which we are measured as scientists - is by publication record.
I'm in that process right now of looking for a tenure-track position and of course I talked to the other post-docs and we all kind of share whatever tidbits of gossip we hear,
and what I've heard recently was if you're interested in an institution like perhaps a research 1 institution, you need ten papers.
You need ten publications and most of them better be first author in prominent journals. Not quite there yet, so I better work on that.
