So whats up beachbums, I appreciate y'all stopping by. I've got a pretty special project
planned for this week. With Memorial Day coming up
with everything that that holiday represents an stands for, I just think it's
gonna be pretty special for me to do an American themed project that's
going to be in memory of my Ranger buddy Jimmy Regan who was killed in iraq
back in 2007 and once is finished i'm going to give it a to my son which has a
birthday in just a couple weeks, whose name is Regan. I think it's going to
be pretty special. So stay tuned
I've got some neat ideas and
let me go ahead and get started.
All right, so here's the piece of furniture I'm going to be re-doing.
I found it on the side of the road in someone's driveway and had a sign on it, free.
I honestly couldn't believe it when I first saw it because it's overall in good condition.
It's got a couple of spots that need a little bit of a repair but
other than that it works great. To get started
i want to go ahead and strip off all the hardware.
I've got a couple sections that what I plan on doing I'm going to paint some of it
and some of it I'll leave with this antique white. So the places I want to paint
i'll go ahead and lightly sand it
just to make sure the paint really sticks to it.
I'll go ahead and get that prepped and everything and once that's done I
can move on to the decorative part I plan on doing.
I'm finished with all the prep work now I can get started on some of the ideas I have. I going
to start off with this center section right here.
What I plan on doing is pretty similar to what I did with the cooler box
where I used some of the pallet wood and cut them down into little strips and then
pieced it together. What I plan on doing right here is, I did a little mock up
of an american flag
just to see what it would look like and I think it turned out pretty cool.
That's what I plan on doing right here so I'm going to go ahead and start cutting up some pallet wood
into little chunks
and start piecing together into an
American flag.
Should be pretty cool!
All right, just finished attaching the wood and now I'm ready to paint this and make it actually look like
an American flag.
I'm going to do something a little different than I usually do. I'm going to use spray paint on the furniture.
The reason behind it is that I don't want to paint it
and everything be nice an perfect because it's already scrap wood and as you can see
it's already got a bunch of just corky
variations and different textures and stuff like that so i think using the
spray paint
will go along with that theme. So I'm going to go ahead and spray this up and
see how it turns out.
That spray paint turned out
awesome bro. So I'm ready to get started on the drawer and the idea I came up with was I
ordered a photograph in poster size, cut it down into individual strips to fit
this inlay part of the drawers. How I'm going to get it on there is I'm going to use
this Mod Podge.
I've never used it before but I did a little practice and it seems to work pretty cool.
I'm going to take these
strips that I've cut down,
use that mod podge,
and glue them on there and I should be good to go. Before I do any of that I need to decide on what kind of hardware I want .
to use.
I've switched from these double screw
hardware to the single screw. So I need to fill in
one of these holes.
A quick little tip is you can take one of these wooden dowels, put a little wood glue on it,
stick it in the hole, and then just saw it off and sand it flush.
That will take care of that no problem. So I'm ready for the mod podge and I've
set my picture in here and made sure it fit perfect before I tried to glue anything.
I made sure my surface is nice and clean and all I'm going to do is put a nice thin layer
over everywhere I want the picture to be and making sure I really get it
into the edges and corners. If the picture is going to curl up or
come unglued that's probably most likely the place that it will. I'm just making sure to get it really good
over there.
While putting this on while it's still wet you've got
a couple minutes to work with it. You can still slide it around and move it around to get
it into place.
So don't worry to much about that. Now I'm just taking an old I.D.
and just
making sure there's no air bubbles
and just spread it out a little bit. Okay, so i got it all spread out and what all
do now is I'll let this set out for like ten to fifteen minutes and then i'll come back
over it
with the top layer of the Mod Podge just to really seal it in.
All right, so now that the
undercoat is dried I'm going to go back over it with the Mod Podge again just to seal
the picture in. This
time I'm going to use a
sponge brush just
to cut down on some of the brush strokes.
All right, I just finished up the graphic
and I think it turned out awesome.
It turned out being a really easy process and I was kind of surprised. Overall, I'm
really happy with it. The photo I end up using
you've probably seen it because it's been
kind of floating around since
2007. This was taken on Memorial Day
and this is actually by buddy Jimmy's
gravesite.
A photographer was there and captured
this emotional scene with
Jimmy's fiance
laying over his grave. I just thought it would be a perfect
thing for this project.
You know, uh... just so
my my son knows you know
what he sacraficed
for the country and everything.
His final resting place i just thought it was
perfect so
i'm really happy with it.
Moving on,
i had another graphic that i had planned on putting on the sides but before I
do that
you know i was thinking I might want to paint it.
So, I'm going to go ahead and put a
layer of paint on first and if the paint doesn't look right I can always put the graphic
over top of it.
All right, I just finished up the paint and I really like it. So I think I'm going to go ahead and stick
with it.
That's an important lesson right there.
Have an overall idea what you want
you project to look like but don't be so rigid where you can't change things.
Like, I had bought another
graphic and everything to go over there
and if I wouldn't have been
flexible
with the way it was looking I would have pobably been like I'm putting it on there anyway no matter what because
I bought it.
You know after doing
the front and everything
I just it was going to be to busy with it
also on the side so i
changed
plans and uh...It turned out good I think it looks great right now.
So the next thing I want to do while the paint is drying
to change the hardware.
I've got these little stars that kind of look like
the flags stars so I think they will look cool.
I just going to go ahead and
make little holes into the
graphic right here and go ahead and start attaching these.
All right, I just finished up
putting the hardware on and the last thing I did was to put clear wax over everything and then
dark wax just over the areas I painted and a little over the graphic just to
antique it a little bit.
Overall, I think it turned out really cool.
I had a lot of fun doing it. It was fun using that Mod Podge because I've
never used it before.
It actually ended up being a lot simplier than I thought it would be. So that turned out great. Overall I'm happy so
check it out right now.
All right, I hope you enjoyed this weeks special
edition project.
With Memorial Day coming up I just want you guys to remember when your out having a good time with
your family just remember what
Memorial Day stands for and what it
represents. Lastly, I wanted to mention that if you guys are wanting to get involved with a great organazation go
over and check out the Lead the Way Fund.org. It's a non-profit Jimmy's parents
started after he was killed what they do is they raise money to help out
fallen Rangers or injured Rangers and their families through difficult times.
It's just a great cause and does a lot of good but even it you don't plan on donating any money
just over there to the site, I'll leave a link down in the bottom, just go over there and check out
who Jimmy Regan was and I guarantee you'll be impressed and inspired by the
kind of man he was in everything so just go check that out.
I just want to say thank you to all the men and women who've
given the ultimate sacrifice. I salute you!
