A common question we are asked is,
"Will my water damage loss be covered under my insurance policy?"
Well, the answer is it depends.
Here are a few things to remember when
dealing with homeowner's insurance and water damage.
If an appliance, like a dishwasher or washing machine fails,
your insurance will cover the damage caused by the water.
However, they may not cover repairs for the
appliance that caused the flooding.
However, water damage resulting from seeping ground water is
considered a maintenance problem and is usually not covered.
Likewise, if water enters your home from a rainstorm,
your insurance would cover any damage from the water,
but not cover the roof repair.
Sewage backups, such as a toilet overflow,
is usually not covered unless you purchased a separate rider.
Every policy is different, and there are many exceptions.
So we strongly suggest that you contact your
insurance agent prior to calling your carrier.
On a side note, don't assume something isn't covered.
If your claim is rejected, check with your insurance
agent to find out if it should have been approved.
