Hi there! I'm Midnight Stories, and am here to try and answer the question, do ponies
have last names?
At first glance, you might say no, and by majority standards, you be right. I mean,
you and I have never heard of Shining Armour Sparkle, or Apple Jack Smith. However, this
logic happens to change when we come to Pinkie Pie's family. Though her parents names are
Igneous Rock and Cloudy Quartz, Her sisters Marble and Limestone both have the last name "Pie"
Pinkie Pie Grandmother is also stated as Granny Pie, though she's also called Nana Pinkie
by Pinkie Pie. This could mean Pinkie Pie was named after her Grandmother, but that's
a whole nother topic. So why does it seem like some ponies have last names when it doesn't
seem to take place in the names of others? Well, here's where we go into head cannon
territory. To me, there seems to be one of two possibilities. Last names might just be
an old tradition, and in families that seem firmly in their ways, much like Pinkie's family,
it might be something they've chosen to keep. There's also the reasoning that it might be
something cutesy to the pony world, and not really a symbol of themselves and their families, to the ones
who have it. Like how a family might have the same first letter of their name, same. Either
way, last names don't seem to be very important in Equestria's society, unlike how it seems
to be fairly fundamental in ours. It makes me wonder if there another type of family
classifying system in Equestria... Anyways, leave a comment below and tell me what you
think of last names in Equestria, or some question of your own about Equestria society and structure!
