Episode 25 — Lindbergh at Lake Village
Hi, I'm Secretary of State Mark Martin, and welcome to This Week in Arkansas History.
Everyone has heard of Charles Lindbergh and his famous flight across the Atlantic.
But most people don't know that Arkansas fits into that story.
In April 1923, Lindbergh was flying over Arkansas when his plane developed engine trouble.
He landed in a field a few miles from Lake Village.
During the afternoon he took a few people up for flights.
That evening, a full moon rose over a clear sky.
Lindbergh decided to view the area from the air at night
and invited his host to join him.
For about 15 minutes, the two flew over Lake Village and the Mississippi River.
It was the first time Lindbergh had flown at night.
Just three years later, he flew through several hours of darkness
on the first non-stop solo trans-Atlantic flight.
